Would perfume be a no-no for a 12/13yo?

Wondering whether to get my 12yo niece a perfume set for Christmas and wondered if this would be OK. She'll be 13 very soon hence the 12/13 in title. She's not too young is she? What do you think?

I read some reviews and they said Vera Wang Princess is nice for teens and it's in a pretty bottle and have seen a gift set with talc too.

I wouldn't recommend a 'proper' perfume for this age, but one of those little selection boxes with several in would be lovely
[rummages]
thus or thus or www.boots.com/en/Parfums-Love-Mini-Angels-Fragrance-Gift-Set_998377/thus
thus etc

apart from anythign else you (and she) would be disappointed if you gave an expensive one and she didn't like it...

BarackObamasTransitVan · 25/11/2009 12:35

I wore "proper" perfume (I think the first was Rive Gauche) when I was 12/13. My mum used to buy it for me for Christmas and birthdays. So no, I don't think your niece is too young at all. I used to love all the expensive packaging and felt terribly sophisticated wearing it. As for not liking it, unless whatever you chose was truly dreadful I doubt you'll have that problem. She won't be fussy and snobbish about perfumes yet, but she'll get that it's not Impulse, iykwim.
IMO giving lovely, grown up things to nieces is part of an aunty's job description

Thanks for both - will have a mooch around boots and see what smells nice and what nice sets they have.

Barack how are you btw?

I bought my daughter (12) the Harajuku perfume - she just loved the bottle more than anything.

CakeBuddy · 25/11/2009 13:11

I think a selection of children's / girly perfumes is a fantastic idea for that age group. It's feminine and 'grown-up' without risking the whole 'too young for make-up?' argument.

Might have to borrow the idea for my niece too......!!!

mysteryfairy · 25/11/2009 13:26

I think perfume in principal is a great present for her age and also think that she won't have highly developed taste so any light young scent will make her happy.

I'm not convincedby the set you have chosen although it looks pretty because
it's got the name "Vera" in it, would cause my DSs to snigger
it's got talc with it - surely no-one under 60 uses that?

Have bought CKOne from that very site for my DSs aged 14 and 13 after a tip from a friend with a DSD age 15 who has been wearing it for a couple of years that it is an in brand for teens.

sandy22 didnt read ur post ! b4 i posted mine with a link to harajuku ! definetly agree its lovely

ClaireDeLoon · 25/11/2009 13:49

The harajuku things look sweet - had a look at superdrug and the 10ml ones are £10 each so could get her 3 of those or I could get her one of the 30ml ones at £19.50 and then something else (earrings maybe as she recently had them pierced). Decisions decisions.

scratch that they're out of stock at superdrug

I'm fine, thank you Loon.
Hope you're OK, too.

This thread has reminded me of the presents my great aunt used to get me. One year (I was 13 or 14) she bought me the most wonderful set of Mary Quant eyeshadows. I loved them. I soooo used to look forward to opening presents from her!

I think the Vera Wang set looks lovely, although it's very frou frou so if your niece isn't that way inclined, she might prefer something less pink. The talc isn't old lady talc I don't think btw - it looks like shimmery stuff. I have no idea what teenage girls go for these days though - I can only cast my mind back to the 80s.

Carrotfly · 25/11/2009 13:59

Yes the Harajuka ones.

In fact I'm wearing that at the moment having cleaned DD's room and spotted it there

ClaireDeLoon · 25/11/2009 14:01

Barack my mum's cousin was an air hostess and she would bring me mini perfume bottles (free sample types) when I was young and I loved her and wanted to be her as she was so glamourous

Erm... is it called Harajuku lovers G ?
Its a blonde girl with a black headband and wearing fishnet tights

I reminds me of that coconutty smell you used to get in the suntan lotion years ago.

But its lovely honestly ....

DangerousDorothy · 25/11/2009 14:11

The harajuku perfumes are available in Debenhams as well as that is where we got some for my DD12.

Carrotfly · 25/11/2009 14:12

Just copied the text from the link above

Harajuku Lovers G fragrance is a modern gourmand scent that smells tropical, sunny and delicious. The top notes feature crisp mandarin, fresh coconut and apple skin. In the heart softer notes of jasmine sambac, soft freesia and magnolia vapour feature, while in the base the notes include coconut cream, white sandalwood and cotton woods.

Freesia, jasmine sandalwood and coconut are amongst my favourite smells no wonder I like it !

jemart · 25/11/2009 14:13

Great idea. Girard Bali Sunrise is nice, smells all peachy and tropical.

ClaireDeLoon · 25/11/2009 14:18

DD1 14 likes the Kate Moss ones and they are fairly subtle. The Harajuku ones smell quite horrible. Would also rec sniffing a few CK ones, as they are just quite light and fresh. Boots have some Ted Baker sets too, which look cute but I don't know what they smell like.

Sandy22 · 25/11/2009 21:07

Yeh got my daughter the Lovers G one as well - got it from Debenhams as they always seem to have 10% off at the moment.

ClaireDeLoon · 25/11/2009 21:48

I got the lil angel one, thanks so much everyone for tips.
