Tell me your favourite carol/piece of Christmas music

either to sing yourself, or a favourite version to listen to

I like Of The Father's Love Begotten (despite my atheism) because I just think it sounds beautiful

and I love all the carols I remember from my childhood, O Little Town of Bethlehem and The Angel Gabriel

and When Santa Got Stuck Up The Chimney, that's my children's favourite too

12 days of christmas because I like to make up my own silly lyrics.

TheFallenMadonna · 24/11/2009 12:51

I am a complete sap when it comes to Christmas music .

My favourite carol is Hark the Herald Angels Sing. And we always sing O Come All ye Faithful at the start of Midnight Mass, and I get all teary at 'Yea Lord we greet thee, born this happy morning'. And if that verse is sung at any time before Midnight Mass I get irrationally angry

O Holy Night reminds me of a chorister at my school who sang it just so beautifully, and 'fall on your knees' is just so fabulous.

I love 'Silver Bells' on my cheesy Christmas CD, and my children's favourite is Santa Claus is coming to town - the Four Tops' version...

nickelbabe · 24/11/2009 12:52

oh yes, the angel gabriel is my favourite too.
of advent ones i love O come o come emmannuel and Adam lay abounden (add your own rude lyrics to the last and the first; highly flavoured lady and adam lay in bondage.... )

i'm very sorry if i have lowered the tone.

nickelbabe · 24/11/2009 12:53

MintyCane · 24/11/2009 12:58

I also love Once in royal Davids City - makes me cry for some reason.

Greensleeves · 24/11/2009 13:02

lol at highly flavoured lady, takes me right back to my school days (getting shit-faced on brandy and mulled wine before the Christmas concert and sniggering through all the carols

I want to start listening to wall-to-wall Christmas music now, but dh says it's too early, grrr

O Holy Night
and
Stop The Cavalry

Marioandluigi · 24/11/2009 13:33

O little town of Bethlehem, especially when sung by little ones

EightiesChick · 24/11/2009 13:40

Religious:
O Holy Night
O Little Town (esp. the Cliff version - love anything with brass in it)
Hark the Herald Angels Sing (Sinatra does a great version of this. And of anything, really)

Secular:
Stop the Calvary (way overdue for a release as a charity anti-war single. Could be the only thing to keep the X Factor winner from No. 1, I reckon)
Christmas Wrapping ('so on with the boots, back out in the snow...)
I Believe in Father Christmas
Little Drummer Boy (Peace on Earth) - Bing Crosby/David Bowie
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - preferably as sung by Sinatra, though his version doesn't have 'until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow', which is the line that brings a lump to my throat
The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole. Such a rich, crisp vocal; it even sounds Christmassy.

Plus many, many more. I heart Christmas music in any shape or form.

iwantapinkprincess · 24/11/2009 14:11
