Sylvanian family - any good ?

DD2 is almost 4. We have a dolls house and all furniture but she is obsessed with Slyvanian family stuff in the shops. Would they fit in the dolls house ? Are the freaky overpriced tat ? Wondered about the animals and caravan as a present, but am concerned about getting more things the same - 100s of bits of pieces littering the house... esp since my children like removing all furniture and building rooms in other rooms.

So if anyone wants a tip - buy furniture and make a house out of stackable shoe boxes...

yes, overpriced but adorable. dd who is 8 loves them (squirrels are my fave !). Be prepared for collecting an assortment though as many of the add-on sets have one family member so you feel obliged to unite them by buyingthe others, and the babies ....

suggy · 23/11/2009 21:00

Awww... but will how do they sit with the dolls house ? Completely different ?

Expensive but they play with them for years I know a 12 year old who still plays with them.

brightwell · 24/11/2009 06:53

My dd 15 loved sylvannians, she's recently passed them all to dn 4, the pair of them sit for ages playing with them.

LIZS · 24/11/2009 08:49

wow that is a bargain ! Might tip off my mum ....

Marne · 24/11/2009 13:58

we have got dd1 this for x-mas and some furniture from e-bay.

Also picked the car up for 14.00 at play.com last week.

badietbuddy · 24/11/2009 14:01

I loved them and dd seems to too. But they are overpriced, and you do find the fiddly bits bloody everywhere, especially if there is a younger sibling involved as well

Indith · 24/11/2009 14:06

They are fantastic Ds now loves to play with all my old ones when he goes to visit my parents. I love that they mix in well with things, we had a few bits like the windmill but also played with them in a "normal" dolls house and had some sylvanian family furniture, some random furniture, some homemade stuff etc. We used to spend hours making tiny food from fimo

LIZS · 24/11/2009 16:27

that link is now at £84.99, sure it was £34.99 earlier

jemart · 24/11/2009 18:27

I had those when I was a kid, loved them well into my teens .
My vast collection is currently stored in my parents loft, soon to be passed on to my two DDs - their friends will be truly .

Teddimac · 24/11/2009 18:46

The caravan and car are brilliant - they had them out on display in John Lewis the other day and I struggled to get DD2 away from the caravan in particular, it's got loads of little cubby holes and stuff. Made Santa's job nice and easy this year!

LilianGish · 24/11/2009 18:48

My dd (8) adores them. In fact they have given a whole new lease of life to her dolls house. They do seem a bit expensive for what they are, but you can add to them bit by bit so quite good when people are stuck for what buy her for birthdays/Christmas. Great for imaginative play - ds (6) plays with them as well.

MrsWobble · 24/11/2009 18:59

they have had massive play value in our house. dd1 passed hers on to her sisters earlier this year having decided at the old age of 14 that she didn't want them any more. dd2 and dd3 still play with them (aged 13 and 10). so we've had 10 years + of Sylvania all over the landing between their bedrooms

suggy · 24/11/2009 20:07

Cool. It was 35.99 on my receipt. Indith thats just what I wanted - I didn't want the dolls house to become defunct - it just now has a new family.

So I bought it for DD2 who is almost 4, should I buy a family for DD1? She is 6 and they do play alot together.

Thanks for ebay tip.

For anyone who missed out on the car and caravan on ebay Argos have the canal boat half price at £19.99:

here

This has been recommended to me as another small home that doesn't take up as much room (or represent such a big investment) as the hotel etc

LIZS · 25/11/2009 12:46

ooh nice one, thanks - do you know if it has figures with it (we don't actually need any more families atm !)

mysteryfairy · 25/11/2009 13:19

I'm not sure. I spotted the boat on an argos ad during I'm a Celebrity last night [eagle eyed emoticon] - although the advert didn't verbally refer to it it was pictured as a 50% off toy. I've since seen on another forum a suggestion it comes with 3 figures but haven't collected mine yet - will report back. They have celebration brownn rabbit family (7 figures) for £9.99 but no stock near me .

suggy · 25/11/2009 20:41

bonus - will get her big sister the boat and a family and they can all go on holiday together.

So what animals would officiandos recommend - have the celebration rabbits on the way.

I got the caravan and car for my dds (6)

...they have never expressed any desire for one. In fact on their letters to Father Christmas, one asked for a "deeeeee s" (a DS, I believe) and the other for "hop weels car"- but I couldn't resist the lure of the Sylvanians- they're soooooooo damn cute

You must get hedgehogs.

Hilarious.

mysteryfairy · 27/11/2009 09:54

I picked up my canal boat from Argos last night. It came with 3 figures and "accessories" exclusive to Argos. I haven't opened it up but there are otters pictured on the box so figures could be otters?

I don't normally shop in argos but I picked up some leaflets last night and noticed that all their sylvanian sets come with extra accessories and/or figures e.g grand hotel is £79.99 but comes with 4 figures plus accessories. If I needed any more I would definitely get from Argos as 4 figures cost in the region of £10-£15 if bought separately.

DD is 8 a fortnight after xmas. We now have ready to give across xmas and birthday:

car and caravan £35.99 from amazon
canal boat £19.99 from argos
day at seaside set £6.50 or £7.50 from Sainsburys during half price toy week

department store £32.50 from Sainsburys ditto
village gift store £6.50 from Sainsburys ditto
Madeline's Boutique £22.95 from John Lewis - around RRP but almost has her name (Madeleine) on it.

Two families from Sainsburys £7.50 each, one was cats, other is rabbits or mice I think.
Five of the little packs with babies and accessories, all from Sainsbos - her teenage brothers will probably need to buy these from me when it transpires they've failed to get her anything for either event.

I really hope she likes them as at the moment she just has one family and we've had that so long not sure where it came from.

I am planning a travel themed present and a shopping themed present, can't decide which way round. Think I need to do the most instantly appealing one at xmas so she is still happy to get more on her birthday. Anyone got any views?

LIZS · 13/12/2009 17:52

Amazon have reductions on atm. Just ordered the elusive Babblebrook Grange 25% off

newpup · 13/12/2009 18:30

suggy.

Hedgehogs are the cutest - so funny!

Also like the squirels and the scotty dogs.

We have tonnes of the stuff but DDs (10 & 7) never tire of playing with them!
