I love it but not sure if I can spend this much money on it.

Just don't buy their plastic version. I did and wish I had spent a bit more on a better quality product. A kitchen is one of those things that gets used for a long time so it's worth saving/waiting till you can afford a good one.

It is absolutely wonderful. Compant but 2 doors and all the things on them they like.

We used it with a small bedside cabinet with drawers next to it and is the sure winner all the dc that come around to play love it. Much better than one of those 2 sided things. It's sturdy and going strong after 11 years and 4 children.

I think a lovely kitchen is well worth spending the extra for. My DD has a beautiful one from GLTC and it was £120 but she plays with it every day and it really stimulates her imagination. That said, if you can't afford it then it is not worth it and there are plenty of cheaper wooden or sturdy plastic kitchens which will do a similar job

We have the GLTC one too. I bought the silver one for DS and it's great - he is a boisterous sort and it stands up to slammed doors and general wear and tear.

Only issue was I insisted that DH put it together on Christmas Eve, rather than just giving him it flatpack in the box and it took him hours, much swearing and claims that it would have been easier to buy him a real one

I saw a very similar one in Costco (shop for trade where you need a card) in Derby. I didn't notice howmuch it was but might be worth looking as it was almost identical

At what age do children tend to stop playing with these kitchens. My DD 6 says she wants one, but I don't know if it will be discarded after a couple months.

I swear by little tikes - on ebay or new. Lasts for ever, and resale value good. I have the country kitchen - quite big, but good from 18mths to 6 plus. Played with every day, and visitors are soo impressed. Can also be used outdoors.

We've just bought the ikea children's kitchen for DD's 2nd birthday and she LOVES it! It's wooden and white so doesn't look quite so out of place in the lounge. You have to buy the top section and bottom section separately and is fairly easy to put together with an allan key and hammer (was especially easy for me as DH did it, and really enjoyed making it, bless!)

I managed to get the ELC off Ebay brand new for £80 :-) Cant wait to set it up for my little boy. Not sure whetehr to give it to him for xmas or his 2nd b'day in March.

CakeBuddy how much was the actual mini kitchen? I can't seem to find it on the Ikea website.

Hmmm, not sure why it isn't listed on the website. I bought mine in Germany and had to get it in store, as couldn't buy it online here either.

The top part was ?34 and the main bottom part was ?95 which I think equates to about £115 total.

I was interested in this, but only the top part is on the website... When I asked in store I was advised that they 'can't make them quickly enough' and there is a waiting list!

Cakebuddy: what is the quality like? I read some comment on an American website that parts of it are a bit flimsy and plastic??

Our second choice is the John Lewis red one, but it is a lot more expensive.

I'm hoping IKEA come up with the goods before Christmas, but they did say it will probably be January before they have them in stock.
