I couldn't find the turkey baster so improvised with...??

Turkey only just fitted into the roasting tin so there was no room to maneuver a spoon to catch the juices and cover turkey.

I did think about lifting turkey out the dish, catching juices then returning turkey to the tin but after weighing up the odds of me dropping the turkey decided against it.

The cooking had all been going to plan so far and I was most upset that we would have to suffer dry turkey because I couldn't find the turkey baster.

Suddenly I was inspired...and found the perfect implement to improvise with. Can you guess what it was?

The little medicine "syringes" used for babies?

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 30/12/2008 12:41

A water pistol?

Next time bentneck, you could just cook the turkey upside down, all the juices would run into the breast meat as it cooked anyway. My FIL always cooks his this way and it's the best ever.

Phew. Good job this thread title wasn't in conception.

UnquietDad · 30/12/2008 12:42

I thought this thread was in the wrong section to begin with.

a mooncup

bentneckwine1 · 30/12/2008 12:44

Nearly Stone...it was actually an even smaller syringe that I had been given by the vet to measure out the tiny kitten's medicine. I must point out that the medicine was only ever sprinkled over the cat's bowl and never put near the cat himself!!!

Have you any idea how long it takes to baste a huge turkey with a tiny droplet???

LOL at Picante and UnquietDad!!

And upside down turkey next year it is...because I am unlikely to remember to buy a turkey baster between now and next christmas if I am not cooking turkey again!

Another poster here who was desperately hoping this was about cooking and not AI!

Picante · 30/12/2008 12:52

God they only measure out like 0.5 ml.

WEIRDO!!

bentneckwine1 · 30/12/2008 12:53

Hi Northern...when I wrote the thread title the idea that it could mean anything other than cooking had not occured to me. Now that it has been pointed out that the thread could have had a whole other meaning I am feeling guily for leading you all up the garden path! I am guessing that you all wish the thread was about something altogether more intresting!!

No tbh I'm relieved. I mean what is the correct thing to say when somebody says ' I couldn't do the deed with my turkey baster so I went for a spoon instead - now it's fingers crossed for a BFP'

I mean - do you go for 'good luck' or ask if they washed it first? Never mind what had happened to the turkey baster in the first place....actually what had happened to your turkey baster?

bentneckwine1 · 30/12/2008 13:06

LOL Northern
No idea what happened to the turkey baster...only cook turkey on christmas day...had it last year but no sign this year. Thinking it might have been thrown out among all the debris of christmas dinner by an over zealous granny that likes to help.

I should really look for a new baster now when they are still in the shops or it will be the same performance next year!!

Have cooked beef and chicken since but smaller joints that allow for a spoon to be used which does away with the need to draw up liquid like you do with a baster!!

Go buy a baster - and be sure to talk loudly about the need for a moist breast whilst you do so - don't want the shop assistants getting the wrong idea
