The children are demanding coloured lights for the tree : what the hell do I put with them?

I have always been white lights, red and gold baubles. They want coloured lights and I don't mind really but the lights are going to be Soho enough - what can I put on it that will look even slightly sophisticated? Sigh...

we always had a red and gold tree and multi-coloured lights.
it will look fine

We just have our usual collection of everything. We normally have white lights but they wanted coloured last year and it looks nice, not sophisticated I grant you , but cosy and they love it.

Habbibu · 18/12/2008 15:49

embrace your inner gaudiness.

padboz · 18/12/2008 15:49

(had? what do you mean had? what do you do now? :-) )

they are multi coloured-you can put anything withn them

we have red, gold, gree, purple baubles. tiny jewelled camels, glass angels, stars made from lolly sticks-all sorts. all looks fab.

twitteringbirds · 18/12/2008 15:50

Hahahaha at sophisticated tree and children decorating it.

mysterymoniker · 18/12/2008 15:51

nothing tackier than aiming for a 'sophisticated tree' is there?

padboz · 18/12/2008 15:53

just go for it, liek a sweet shop it'll be!!

my dd wnated the multicoloured lights this year too. we put the white ones on, but both looked at each other sort of non-plussed really!

we have cerise, silver, red, gold, it looks like a box of quality street. cute tho!

thisisyesterday · 18/12/2008 15:56

when I say "had" i mean at home growing up, and i think it looked lovely. everyone I know always had multicolouired lights actually.

now we have plain ones, because I got them free, but i might change to multi-coloured. and my tree is decorated all in pink

i am the queen of tack

ThePellyandMe · 18/12/2008 15:59

We have a green tree, multi-coloured lights and the same for baubles. Its tacky as hell and I love it

Christmas decorations are meant to be a bit tacky aren't they?

themulledmanneredjanitor · 18/12/2008 16:28

camels were gift from mil who lives in middle east

Tell them when they are grown up and buy their own tree they can have what eer coloured lights they like.

Or go Kitch, and just throw any old baubles, and blue tinsel on like we did in the 70's.

cece · 18/12/2008 18:40

We have a fake green tree with multi coloured lights. The rest of it is basically everything we have, baubles of various colours, homemade baubles of various colours, red tinsel... I love it. Not sure I approve of 'sophisticated' trees - I always think they look a bit contrived! Go for it, tis glorious, a riot of colour!

Jux · 18/12/2008 18:44

I used to try to have a 'tasteful' Xmas tree - before I married. DH thought I was mental. Let's face it, dressing a beautiful thing like a tree in anything but snow (real) is going to be trashy, no matter how tasteful you try to make it. Just go for it.

TipsyFairydifferentID · 18/12/2008 18:47

we have a black tree with silver and white tinsel, pink lights and silver/purple/white decorations

rolandbrowning · 18/12/2008 18:47

I can't stand white lights or tasteful trees, it was difficult to find coloured lights but finally got them in Poundland!!

Jenbottleofeggnog · 18/12/2008 19:36

What about just having white baubles?

flubdub · 18/12/2008 19:42

Jeez, chuck what youve got on it! Weve got a black tree with coloured lights, and any bauble i like the look of, and some chocs.

smartiejakeonachristmascake · 18/12/2008 19:56

Our tree has always had coloured lights. I use red and gold baubles and tinsel but we also have lots of lovely crap decorations that the dds have made over the years that rather ruin enhance the colour scheme.
