Christmas Eve - carp in plum, beer and gingerbread sauce (we live in Prague so had better do carp - most people have it fried, but I don't really fancy frying a load of fish at the last moment, so I'm making the 'black sauce' above, which is trad. Czech. You can buy special gingerbread for grating here, they use it to thicken sauces.)

Potato salad - OPINIONS NEEDED - is this going to go with the carp & sauce? A mayonaisy potato salad with ham and peas in is traditionally what people eat with the fried carp, but I don't know whether it might not be weird with the plum sauce.

& pea soup to start with
& Christmas biscuits (like Austrian Vanillekipferl, with ground hazelnuts - I'm more used to making these) etc. to finish with.

Christmas Day lunch - no idea yet...

Christmas dinner - tiny weeny bit of smoked salmon to start with, turkey, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, brussels sprouts, mixed sauteed root veg, sausages in bacon etc. Christmas pudding. Cheese etc.

Boxing day - eat up, plus ham (maybe cooked in cider - also from Nigella & very good.)

girlywhirly · 12/12/2008 15:11

Christmas eve lunch
Gammon joint in Guinness
mashed potato
broccoli
gravy from the cooking liquid
poached pears in marsala

tea; oatcakes, cheeses, pates, mince pies (homemade pastry and mincemeat) fruit, nuts etc.

Christmas lunch
free range chicken, gravy
bacon and chipolatas
homemade stuffing
apple wedges fried in butter
roasties
carrot and parsnip puree with creme fraiche and nutmeg
mange tout
warm mince pies, brandy cream

tea; as yesterday minus mince pies and with fruit trifle

Boxing day

Brunch egg, bacon, tomato, mushrooms, etc as DH going to football match.

Dinner; cold gammon, chicken, sausages, mash and baked beans
trifle

This is just for two people!

christMAScomesbutonceayear · 12/12/2008 15:39

crikey - you all sound amazing such organisation !! am impressed esp by vesela's menu

ChestnutsRoastingonanOpenFlier · 12/12/2008 15:49

Well I decided last night that I would bite the bullet and order an M&S turkey, so went in today to do that and also ordered the Lochmuir salmon & Prawn en croute Yum!

so that is the main part of christmas day and boxing day sorted just got to decide on veggies etc. Will probably do braised red cabbage, did that last year and it was delicious.
I normally do a tiramisu but Gordon Ramsays Mandarin cheesecake on his cook along the other week looked gorgeous so may do that.

Ditto gravy made with giblet stock if the turkey had the bits with it!

umm, sure I've forgotten something it's usually 13 things plus turkey...

Homemade christmas pudding and
ditto brandy butter
ditto mincepies

coffee, fruit, more pudding

Boxing Day
Old favourite recipe Turkey au gratin
(white sauce flavoured with parmesan, sherry garlic) breadcrumbs/cheese top, green salad,
I'm getting bored... leftovers ++++

This year, first year away from home, other side of teh world, MIL and her sister in charge and there will 13 adults + children, so we'll see!

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 13/12/2008 09:03

Christmas Eve -
Borscht
mushroom Pierogi.
I'm going to make both in advance. The pierogi work really well frozen before they are cooked.

Christmas day
After much negotiation we are having smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.

Goose, roast potatoes, the usual veg (though i'd like to make them a bit more interesting), chipolatas.
Can't work out what sort of stuffing if any to have. Not sure if the whole thing will be too greasy?

Then because we will be full we'll have the Christmas pudding a bit later.

Boxing day
Breakfast - who cares!

left over goose, ham, nice chips, pickles.
trifle

evening will be leftovers if anyone is hungry

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 13/12/2008 09:11

Vesela - I'm not sure about the potato salad with plum? Are there any non mayonnaisy potato salad recipes?

ThomcatIsForLifeNotJustForXmas · 13/12/2008 09:14

Xmas Eve - haven't decoded yet. Might do a nice big spag bol for everyone - ????

Xmas Day - maybe smoked salmon and scrambled eggs or maybe nothing for us and scrambled egg for the girls

nibbles of pigs in blankets etc with kir royales

Frois Gras to start on home made melba toasts

Turkey with sausages, bacon, stuffing, sprouts, carrots, cabbage, pease, bowl of mash, roast potates, parsnips, cranberry sauce

All served with special wines from the basement, hurrah

xmas pud with brandy butter or cointreau butter and or cream

coffee, mince pies, nuts, chocolates and the port comes out.

Turkey salad sandwiches in the evening with more sticky drinks

Boxing Day - scrambled eggs, smoked salmon

then bubble & squeak later

Maybe a buffet type tea of cold cuts, cheese, bread, pickles etc etc

ThomcatIsForLifeNotJustForXmas · 13/12/2008 09:15
