I've left it too late to buy ds much wanted present. Do I disappoint him or pay 2X price on ebay?

title says it all. He wants the lego police centre, retailing at £47 and sold out everywhere. There are a few on ebay for £80-£90, dh will be mad if I pay double but can I really disappoint my ds? It is the only thing he wants and he has talked about it for weeks.

Here it is My dad lives in the US and is coming over on 18th Dec. If you get completely desperate I could get him to bring it over. The only thing is I don't know if I would get it to you in time as I am in London.

madamy · 08/12/2008 22:24

here?

madamy · 08/12/2008 22:27

amazon france have it in stock - how's your French?

mymama · 08/12/2008 22:28

Don't risk Australia.

I work for Australia Post and I doubt very much it would make it in time now.

psst - I don't post anything of value - I see what happens to it all.

fingers crossed you find one.

dearprudence · 08/12/2008 22:30

In stock on this site

They are US based and will ship in 4-10 days

luckywinner · 08/12/2008 22:33

I love the way the US call it Police Headquarters. Sounds so much more dramatic.
I got it wrong, my dad doesn't actually get here till 21st so that might rule it out completely unless I got delivered to him and then he posted it straight away instead of waiting to bring it over. sorry.

I would recommend following Madamy's link to Amazon France. I've ordered things from both French and German Amazon (mostly Wii bits) using my normal UK log on details and everything has always gone smoothly. I do speak French, but don't speak a single word of German and have never had a problem as the customer experience is identical on all the sites. For extra confidence you can use an online translator like babel fish to check what you are doing. Delivery from Amazon France has been less than a fiver for me and takes approx 4 days. It will feel like it costs a bit more than the UK price as the pound is so weak against the euro but better than the ebay prices.

Looks like a fab toy BTW

MadameCastafiore · 09/12/2008 12:09

Have you tried the Lego Shop in Bluewater - ring them and then get family to pick it up.

MadameCastafiore · 09/12/2008 12:10

Try looking in yellow pages - independant department stores in your area and smaller toy shops normally are great at having things the big retailers sell out of.

We do this a lot with playmobil for DS.

HappyMummyOfOne · 09/12/2008 12:14

The French Amazon looks a good bet, theres a website you can use that converts the text to english so may be worth a shot.

macherie · 09/12/2008 12:36

I have just rung the 2 best toyshops for lego in Dublin, both sold out of it weeks ago. One has the airport if that's any good?

I had a similar problem a few years ago, so I took ds to a big toyshop on his own and spent ages looking at everything. It didn't take long for him to change his mind and want something else. I made a big fuss about Santa might not be able to change his present at the last minute, so when he did get the 2nd choice thing he was delighted

You could always get the police station for his birthday.

Wow, thanks everyone. Lots of ideas here. Mumsnet comes up trumps!!

I found a toy shop in NI with the said item in stock and started another thread hoping to find someone in NI to help. Bethron has (extremely kindly) said she will pick it up for me and post here to me in Bournemouth. How fab is that??!!

Thanks again everyone and fingers xx that the shop still has the lego in stock when Bethron arrives!

macherie, thank you for ringing up those shops. Very very kind.

I didnt know about translation sites, my
French is so crappy I dont think I would be confident enough to attempt to navigate their site.

God, I love MN

thenewme · 09/12/2008 12:44

Have you got one yet?

macherie · 09/12/2008 12:46

Fantastic! So glad you got it, was thinking of your ds's face on Christmas morning.

Mumsnet is fab

kitbit · 09/12/2008 12:46

Can you get him some of the little boxes of accessories that go with it, and a voucher to go and get the real thing in the new year? Then he has lots to open and can go and shop for his police station when it's available?

don't pay double though, it's daylight robbery and taking the piss

My BF is having this very problem with the Clone Wars Blaster and is now toying with paying £40+ for it on e-bay when it is retailing (where available - nowhere) for £19.99.

Hope you all get what you are looking for.

ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 09/12/2008 18:01

Yay Bethron! Well done you.

PerkinWarbeck has manged to get me a Man City jersey for DS.

ssd · 09/12/2008 19:23

well done bethron! fantastic!

cheshirekitty · 09/12/2008 19:52

Bethron rules ok.

Guadalupe · 09/12/2008 19:57

I know the feeling.

Ds1 wrote a list a few days ago asking for Beedle the bard. I thought the collectors edition looked fab but was astonished to see it was fifty pounds, though 20 goes to charity.

The I saw it was sold out and looked on ebay and people are charging between £80 - £199. Die hard fans then.
