Is this a silly present for a nearly 8 year old girl?

A laminator? she loves drawing/writing/playing schools.

And if it's a good idea, which one to get?

No idea emkana, never seen one. What do they look like?

Need a present for an 8 year old girl too.

I would have loved one at that age

No idea about models though.

janeite · 04/12/2008 20:32

it's a totally mad idea - but could well be a genius idea too!

My only concern would be that they get pretty hot and are sometimes a bit fiddly to use.

roundcornvirgin · 04/12/2008 20:33

good idea - will keep her busy for ages.

we have a cheap one from whsmiths (think it was about £9.99) and then I get 15 A4 laminating sheets in the poundshop and laminate dd1 drawings and she uses them as placemats

roisin · 04/12/2008 20:36

Yeah Janeite's right, they can get hot; so I would make sure it is kept in a shared room and only used/switched on in a certain place (worktable), so that it's obvious if it's accidentally been left on.

Hark at me going on about the dangers of laminators: My dad bought ds2 a soldering iron for his 7th birthday and we've had no major mishaps!

Fab idea!!!! Along with an elactric pencil sharpener!

sandyballs · 04/12/2008 20:46

My nearly 8 year olds would absolutely love it. They are always giving me things to laminate at work.

hatwoman · 05/12/2008 11:38

we bought a little one to make labels for their toy boxes and we had good fun - made labels for just about everything we could think of...but...suprise suprise...haven;t used it since...(and the labels have turned into the kind of detritus they were meant to assist in sorting out...) so I reckon an a4 one would be better - for their pictures etc. at least I think so.

AMumInScotland · 05/12/2008 11:56

Nice idea - make it at least A4 as then she can make small posters.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 05/12/2008 12:23

Great idea. Just keep an eye on what she laminates - I can confirm that putting glitter (for instance) through a laminator will result in its premature demise.

Sounds like a good idea. In fact, it's such a good idea I might have to steal it for my 7 year old very artistic niece

kslatts · 05/12/2008 14:41

That is an excellent idea and if you can get the as cheaop as £9.99 I might get one for dd1's stocking.
