Digital photo frame for Granny

We're wondering whether to get a digital photo frame for our mothers. Since we got a digital camera, they don't get many piccies of DD to dote on, so I'm sure they'd like it IF it was easy to use. MIL 90 and not into new technology, my mum mid-80s but learning to use computer.

But we don't have one ourselves, so don't know the pros and cons. Can anyone recommend something that's really easy to use? I would guess we'd want to be able to send a memory stick occasionally to give them new pics.

Any advice much appreciated.

Watching with interest, as I've been looking at these for MIL. She is computer illiterate so we would load the pics on for her and refresh every so often.

From what I've seen, the ones that take a USB stick as well as an SD card tend to be more expensive, and I want something at the cheaper end (£30 - £40 ish).

My Dh and I got one for DH's grandparents last xmas... he sells them in his shop at work... they are even cheaper this year too but anyway, they find it pretty easy to use.

Tesco Direct has a few for around £25/30, you then need to a SD stick (about £5).
We got my PIL's one for their anniversary, they love it.

Here We bought the £29.97 one

So you still need a memory stick? Whats an SD stick? Can you just add your memory card from a camera?

AmIWhatAndWhy · 17/11/2008 13:09

A word of warning, I got one of these last christmas for my grandma and it stayed in its box, she really didn't like it.

Could you not buy a lovely frame with an enlarged print in it, then order a new photo every month from an online print place to be delivered to the?

Lizzylou · 17/11/2008 13:09

SD card is what is in your camera, yes, you can just add that in (that is what PIL's did and they put the new SD card into their camera).

We couldn't just send the card out of the camera and replace it, cos theres two grannies!

I'd want my brother's to be able to send pics to my mum too.

I think my mum would like it better than actual photos - she doesn't have much room, and has offloaded most of her snaps to us already.

Get two SD cards and transfer your snaps onto those?
They can then add any that they want onto it.
PIL's used their own SD card out of their camera, the new one we bought went into their camera IYSWIM

I must admit I never deal with downloading the images or anything so haven't dealt with SD card - I'd somehow not thought that anything but the camera would be able to write to them but that's probably not logical. so you can stick an SD into your PC and dump images onto it as well as taking them off, is that it?

I want one for my mum too - so all suggestions welcome here too. Can you set them so that they bring up a new picture every day?

cheshirekitty · 17/11/2008 20:39

We bought one for mil last christmas (mil is 85). She used it when she was with us, but I don't think she has used it since.

Instore/poundstretcher are doing one for £30. You can use an sd card or usb stick with it. It looks ok, not sure about the picture quality though, I don't know much about these things.

hellion · 17/11/2008 21:40

If they are not into new technology, they would probably want to upload the photos themselves. Also we bought one for Granny (90) last year, and it only gets used if someone is there to switch it on (and off). I don't think she is keen on it. She still goes back to the good old paper photo album!!!

Asda has one for £30

Argos are selling one for £29.99, reduced from £139.99.
