Karaoke & DVD players - help!

DD wants a karaoke machine for Xmas. here in Dubai, there is nothing that you can't buy, but there only seems to be one Karaoke machine on the market - it's more than I want to pay.
I noticed a model of DVD player the other day that mentiomned something about Karaoke.
This set me thinking.
If I buy microphones and the CGI type LKaroke discs, using my regular DVD player - isn't this just the same thing??

Said DVD player wasn't overly expensive - but i really don't need another one

you need a CDG player to play CDG cds/dvds. You will be able to hear the sound but the lyrics won't play on the screen

could you not get a Singstar for Playstation (2 or 3) if you have one? Can play dvd's on these also..

We love our singstar!!

aaaaaaaaaaaaahhh, so I do need the special DVD player then.
I don't have a PS, but Santa is bringing a WII - do these have singstar type thingies?

quite possibly.. they seem to have everything else to connect to a wii! check with GAME shop or somewhere i think..
