What do you put in your Advent calendars?

I keep seeing all these lovely Advent calendars about with pockets and drawers and suchlike, but don't have much of an idea of what to put in them. Any suggestions?

Also - I'm an only child. One Advent calendar between the family or one per child?

We have two children and two little christmas trees, and each day the advent fairy puts two decorations for their trees in the pockets fo the calendar, and each day they hang the decoration on their tree

this has worked well

Oh one each! I used to buy packets of chewits or Opal Fruits (that's what they're supposed to be called, anyway!) When DD was under 5, I think she had a chocolate coin in each box, now she is 13, I nick 24 coins out of DH's jean pocket and use them! Sometimes she gets 50p or £1 and other days is only a penny! Its the luck of the drawer/draw! On Xmas eve she get a fiver in the box.

Great ideas. Will keep the coin idea for future years - it's great! Um, might be a daft question morningpaper, but I take it you're not buying 48 new Christmas decorations a year? These are previous decorations that the Advent fairy has access to?

They're lovely. In handy packs of 24, too!
