Do I bother to ice my Christmas cake?

I DO want to ice my cake, but we have nut allergies in the family, so marzipan is out. What can I use instead? Should I just do some rough "snow" icing straight onto the cake?
I'm worried that the copious amounts of brandy I'm throwing at the cake will seep out and stain the icing if the marzipan isn't there.

I have been known to decorate a christmas cake by cutting out star shapes in marzipan and icing and just sticking them to the cake with some jam. you could do the same with just tthe icing?

Do a layer of fondant icing and then decorate the rest with royal icing as snow peaks.

Is fondant icing the stuff you can buy ready rolled?!?
