Guitar teacher at DD's old school has recommended these for children starting. 3/4 size for a 10yo so you may need smaller.

P'raps kids smaller round here

Lilyloo · 05/11/2008 09:18

That looks more like it posey , think he would be too small for full size and i also don't really want to pay more than £50 in case he doesn't use it.
Don't actually know whether he means electric or not never thought of that better ask him!

A traditional guitar might be better for learning?

mrsgboring · 05/11/2008 09:27

If you are going to be starting lessons, take advice, but if it is just for mucking about with, we got one on Freecycle for nothing (we just had to buy a replacement string for it)

JumpingDizzy · 05/11/2008 11:52

They have some nice ones on ebay. Both my boys age 8 and 11 want guitars, except one wants a red one and the other blue

sockmonkey · 05/11/2008 12:10

They sometimes have them in The Works, or similar cheap-y book shops.

squilly · 05/11/2008 19:37

We got one for DD from Home Bargains as a surprise pressie for £15. It's a nice wooden one. Nothing fussy

louii · 05/11/2008 19:39

Asda has some nice kids acoustic ones.

Grammaticus · 05/11/2008 19:43

Music shops do acoustic ones for about £30 - £40 3/4 size

Lilyloo · 05/11/2008 19:54

Right have established it's wooden not electric he syas he wants to learn

Consider a Ukulele, only 4 string a lot smaller and you can play a C chord and sing row your boat and Frere jacque along with it and feel like a genius at 6.

You Tube and Google very good for getting started with the Uke. I have never mastered the guitar despite being very musical, but I picked up the Ukulele well enough to teach it to a class over a 2 week holiday.

twentypence · 05/11/2008 20:04

Sorry meant to say you can play a C chord using only 1 finger.

ProfYaffle · 05/11/2008 20:06

Lidl had them in stock today at £30. pil are buying dd1 (4) a Ukulele for about the same price.

GColdtimer · 05/11/2008 20:22

Just to warn you, it is very hard for 6 year olds to learn the guitar as it takes a lot of co-ordination. DH is a guitar teacher and doesn't take them on until they are 9. I would get a cheapy argos child size one or have a look on ebay for second hand.

PinkChick · 05/11/2008 20:24

'real' child size guitars in toys r us from £20, some with cases, ltos of diff styles, really nice..got one for niece for birthday in pink!..they had black, red, standard brown/wood.hth

bluesky · 06/11/2008 19:41

ds's teacher recommended the argos one, it's great, he got it when he was 7, it's not full size. So just right.

Lilyloo · 07/11/2008 21:01

Have found out tonight his favourite teacher who does his choir clss from y1 is learning guitar and he wants 'a brown one with a string round his neck and a tall thing with a book on'
