Xmas lights in London- best places to see and when?

When do they put these up? Is there somewhere we can go or do to see a good cross-section? Do the tour buses go around? We live 1.5 hrs away by train but thought we might take DSs, 7 and 9 up this year- with perhaps a trip to Hamleys?

Oxford St go on this week I think. Take a regular bus up Regent Street from Piccadilly and along Oxford St from Oxford Circus to Marble Arch. Hamleys and Selfridges windows usually worth a look.

I looked this up at the weekend. Oxford Street get turned on a week Wednesday (12th Nov)

Do they decorate the river bridges with lights? Is the Embankment worth a look?

It's not usually that fantastic (very poor IMHO!), and you have to battle with the crowds....
... but Hamleys is great and so are the shop windows around the area.

Lots of the museums do good activity sessions for Christmas - try googling (Geffreye is FANTASTIC!)and free!

Whats Geffreye???? Last year wasn't there some sort of Christmas thing outside one of the museums??? Is the winter wonderland on again this year?

I think there's a xmas market on outside the Natural History Museum, and yes I think Winter Wonderland is on again. We're thinking of doing a similar thing in a few weeks - Oxford/Regents/Hamleys and Winter Wonderland. I think if you don't actually want or need to buy anything and brace yourself for crowds it's fine really.

We might go when the shops are shut really late and give Ds an extra treat of being up late. What is Winter Wonderland?
