Lighthearted - we all know every other family apart from our own does it wrong!

Mine are:

  • no pigs in blankets
  • BOILED veg 🤮
  • treating the Christmas cracker like a competition (we are are each person gets their own cracker prize family!)

My family of psychopaths and I link arms to do the crackers.

We also have roast and mash potatoes.
We all love both and both are vital for bubble and squeak on Boxing Day.

To each his own I say...

Although admit judge bad gravy and am horrified at the thought of peas 🎅

Packet bread sauce - it’s vile
a big lump of sausage meat just plonked on the table - looks so unappealing. Just use it to make a tasty stuffing

People who allocate two roast potatoes per person. There needs to be a huge mound of them!

When making roasties I make sure there are a minimum of 5 per person!

I don't like stuffing with meat in it - it's excessive alongside everything else. I bit of Paxo on it's own is fine!

There has to be mash, and sorry you get boiled veg at my house because the kids would not eat roasted. Although we do have roasted parsnips and a sprout gratin.

Yorkshire puddings (unless they’re having beef)
Sweetcorn

Genuine questions.... 1) how easy it it make gravy from scratch (I'm a granules gal) and 2) for peas / broccoli - how can these be cooked any other way than boiled? 😆

DuckFilledPlatitude · Today 15:24

I'm another who has no enthusiasm for pigs in blankets. I like bacon. Sausages are OK in some contexts, e.g. a hot dog. I don't like the two together and I don't want them alongside a roast dinner - I would rather have more of the roast meat than waste my appetite on sausages.

The first year at my in laws was a horror show. No nibbles at all for the entire day. No cranberry sauce.

I was used to everything on the table and everyone picks what they want. Mil plated up everything in the kitchen, added gravy and fucking ketchup to each one, then microwaved each one and bought a plate out every 3 minutes. Bil and sil had finished eating and left the table before half of us had even started. It was awful.

I thought I was open-minded about Christmas dinner but wow! Not sure which part of this sounds worst. Maybe the ketchup.

tasteless gravy,
Meat that was cooked the night before and served either cold or reheated in gravy,
pale pigs in blankets,
potatoes that haven’t been roughed up before roasting,
sweetcorn,
overcooked under seasoned vegetables. I’m happy to have them steamed, boiled, roasted, puréed or whatever but they need to be cooked well,
cold plates,
cold drinks served at room temperature.

A starter- how do you fit it in?
Cauliflower cheese as a side
Not a single sprout at the table, it’s the law to have them.

Starter…. Eaten an hour or so before, only melon and Parma ham.

I eat my one and only sprout of the year on Christmas Day 😁

Sadly ( for our sense of smell) DP loves them and eats about 8 😵‍💫

It was all perfectly adequate until paxo and gravy granules 🫣

If you make up the gravy from granules, season it, add level teaspoon of marmite then tip it in the pan where the meat juices are and boil it up with some alcohol,( sherry, wine, cider etc. ) it makes a rather nice flavoured gravy, that bears no resemblance to just granules and hot water.
