Book recommendations for dd age 13

Hey! I always give my dds at least one new book at Christmas, so I'm looking for recommendations!

I think I'll get The Penelopiad for dd1 (age 15) as she enjoyed The Handmaids Tale. But I'm not sure what dd2 (age 13) might like? She's a good reader, has recently enjoyed Flowers For Algernon, so I wonder if there's anything with a similar vibe?

Grateful for any advice from people with similar age dc!

You might get some recommendations in the book forums on here.

Some Primo Levi short stories might work well. The Periodic Table, or, for something that's more speculative fiction, The Sixth Day (I think it's out of print, but can be found secondhand).

Away from the theme of the interplay of technology and humanity, 'Babette's Feast' (usually collected with other short stories) might be a good option. Poignant and warm and deeply human.

What other books has she enjoyed?

The Pinch of Magic Series? If she likes fantasy / magic there's tonnes, though maybe steer away from the overly graphic Romantasy stuff...look in Young Adult. Terry Pratchett? Especially Tiffany Aching, starting with Wee Free Men.

Outside of fantasy, if she likes history, any of the Phillipa Gregory, Sharon Penman type things.

I think the Pinch of Magic series could be a bit young for the OP's daughter.

How about Klara and the sun and/or Never let me go by Kazuo Ishiguro?

Some great ideas, thank you. Never Let Me Go is a brilliant suggestion, I think she'd really enjoy that! I'll look up the others I haven't heard of.

In case anyone else is looking for ideas, some of the books dd2 has enjoyed recently are:

The Girl of Ink and Stars
The House With Chicken Legs
Flowers For Algernon
Of Mice and Men

All brilliant books!

How about Fahrenheit 451?

Noughts and Crosses?

The Hunger Games?

Sounds like you are looking for something well written and thought provoking.

The "serious" books my 14 year old has enjoyed have included:
Animal Farm
Lord of the Flies
The Bees

She also likes horror, so I will include:
The Shadow over Innsmouth
Cujo

(Realise some people may not see these as "serious" lit, but I kind of do).

This year I have ordered her Maurice by E.M. Forster, along with a couple of lighter reads. (Something by Malorie Blackman - not really that light I guess! - and something set in Japan, I can't remember what it's called but she is fascinated by Japan generally).

Most books I get her second hand from charity shops , but I did get Maurice new.

Just saw someone else had mentioned the Bees - what a weird coincidence! I love that book.
