Sharing this for those who might not have seen it, or for those who have and need a reminder that not buying unnecessary gifts is absolutely okay.

He’s not saying ‘be a Scrooge’, he’s not saying ‘your presents are shit’, he’s not saying ‘Christmas is rubbish’. He’s saying be aware of the impact of your gift on others.

And if it’s not a problem, go for it!

I think he's a nice man, seems to genuinely care. I admire him for that speech.

You don’t like the message he is giving?

Tit for tat? I’ve never given anyone tat. And not sure he’s the right person to be talking about this at all. I only give to my family, and if I’m a guest somewhere during the week a gift they will appreciate.
I know people seem to get into trap of giving gifts to all and sundry, and if they feel it’s a burden they can stop. Surely no one needs Mr Lewis to explain this?

It’s not about you then, is it?

It's well known there's huge social pressure around Christmas gift giving. Lots of people do value this being articulated.

If you don't share a problem that's great but don't be dismissive of other people who might not feel exactly as you do.

The whole point of being trapped is that they can't stop 🙄 The immense pressure and guilt tripping i got from everyone when I tried to reduce gift giving was ridiculous. Fortunately I'm stubborn once I've decided on something but it still took me nearly three years to whittle it down to just immediate family and parents. Even now I'm being pressured to join the works and friendship groups secret santa things despite saying no thanks at least three different times.
