FPV drone kit

My ds has asked for a FPV drone kit for Christmas. He’s sent me a link of one from Ali express, but I really don’t want to commit to buying one unless I know it’s really worth it. He’d like a kit with goggles. If anyone has bought one or has experience of one, I’d love any advice or recommendations please. What does he intend to use it for, OP?

How old is he?

He is 15. I’m really not sure as don’t know much about them, but he’s forever watching videos of them and playing computer games related to them.

I'm not sure about drones for 15 year olds, OP.

He might not be mature enough to realise the perils of flying it above local back gardens, especially during the summer and some people may get quite annoyed with him.

At 15, I would be asking him what else he would like for Christmas and buying another option.

Hopefully, other posters who know more about drones will chip in with other perspectives for your consideration.

DH is a drone designer, so I asked him. Of course he thinks it's a great present idea, but cautioned that you can only really fly them outside of towns in specific areas (away from any airports, military installations, tourist landmarks etc). Does your son know where he's going to use it? Also apparently it's quite a steep learning curve to fly an FPV drone and it's much harder than an ordinary drone. It's possible to buy much cheaper ones, which might be a good idea to learn on to see if he really enjoys it and gets much use out of it? After spending hours of looking for the drone after it's crashed in long grass, he might decide it's not actually all that fun.
