Has anyone started stocking up on Christmas food?

So today I bought a tub of quality street and some pigs in blankets. I like to try and buy extra bits weekly so it’s not a massive outgoing nearer Christmas. Only thing now is having to avoid the quality street until Christmas 😂
Anyone else started the Christmas food shop?

Can I ask why you never buy snacks unless for an occasion? Isn't life dull without nice bits to eat?

Also someone who never buys snacks and I think it depends on what you mean by nice things to eat! There are many nice things you can eat without buying shite in your weekly shop.

Lemon Posset (serves 6)

600ml double cream
150g caster sugar
Juice of 2 large lemons*

  • Put the cream and sugar into a saucepan over a low heat, and bring to the boil slowly, stirring to make sure that the sugar dissolves
  • Boil for 3 minutes then remove from the heat and allow to cool
  • Add the lemon juice and whisk well
  • Pour the mixture into 6 large serving glasses and refrigerate for 3 hours

*the recipe I use, (which is from bbc.co.uk/food) also says to add the zest of the lemons; I don't do this as I prefer the texture without it.

I usually serve these with little shortbread biscuits - Walkers sometimes have boxes of biscuits shaped like Scottie dogs, and at this Christmas I bought these from Waitrose

https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/walkers-shortbread-festive-shapes/997626-1-2

I use this recipe too.
I add the lemon zest and then sieve it out as it does bring a sharpness that’s lovely. You could add the zest in large pieces that you have bruised and just fish them out.
@SummerBlueskies ive used this recipe for over 15 years and never ever had any issue with it. It’s fab.

No because we do eat nice things. We just don’t eat shop bought snacks.

Edited

Fair enough but why buy them at Christmas then?

Do you buy 'shite' at Christmas?

Blueuggboots · 01/10/2026 11:17

We have done our M&S shop and paid the deposit. We’re not doing much else??!!

Ekal · 01/10/2026 11:36

No, although I may order something in advance for delivery. We're considering helping out at a soup kitchen on the day, so we may not need to shop at all (depends on my sister's health).

@WildlyInappropriate Where did you find Treeslets?

I have been hunting but no joy as yet.

Gresley · 01/10/2026 12:10

Having been on Mounjaro for three months why would I risk wasting all that money and getting fat again? I'd rather stock up with 'prepare' type supplies. In any case I get fed up with chocolates very quickly at Christmas and end up binning them or giving them to the food bank. Might as well give them to the food bank before Christmas really, cut out the middleman. But then I have no kids.

… because it’s Christmas and it’s a special occasion? Same reason I put up a tree, do stockings and give people presents and make a Christmas dinner but don’t do it the rest of the year.

ToadRage · 01/10/2026 12:31

We bought a frozen pack of pigs in blankets ages ago, chocolates would not be safe in our house so we leave them til last. We were caught out one year when we bought our duck super early but when we took it out of the freezer it was green and stinking, so we had no bird for Christmas day. We have started going to a local farm shop so I can't wait to see what goodies they have in for Christmas.

Morrisons! I was able to order them as part of my home delivery a couple of weeks ago. And Twiglets!

EveningSpread · 01/10/2026 12:38

Nope, we have a tiny house and I don’t need any temptation as far as treats go!

GentleSheep · 01/10/2026 12:39

Since I have to be gluten free there's not nearly so much choice and anything remotely decent is snapped up and is gone pretty early, so no. I would only eat it if I bought now though!

ForGutsyMember · 01/10/2026 14:20

No. The shops are only shut Christmas day.

I've ordered a few things from Ocado to put away. I managed to get the Hotel chocolat advent calendar, A box of the big mix chocolates (not sure if I will like them so got the box instead of the tin), Hotel chocolate everything box and some Lebkuchen Milk Chocolate Hearts with Apricot Filling.

Lssy year I bought the big mix chocolates because of the reviews they had here and they were awful.

I also use this recipe but I serve it in very small coffee cups with homemade short bread on the saucer along with a small teaspoon. It’s very rich and a small portion is enough for me despite being a gannet.

I thought they were lovely! I was near M&S yesterday so picked up 2 tins, one will be a gift.

When you say awful - compared to what? Are you someone who can only eat the finest 'proper' chocolate? They were infinitely nicer than what quality street, roses, terry's chocolate orange etc have become in my opinon, but I can see they wouldn't stand up against something artisanal if that's what your tastes run to.

I thought they were as unpleasant as the tins of traditional Christmas chocolates now are.

Do I like good chocolate? Yes. Sprungli is my favourite. But I also like some everyday chocolate as well. Right now I’m having quite the taste for Crunchies and Lindt plain chocolate.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/10/2026 14:10

I bought some Haribo for DS ( none of the rest of us eat them )
I need to tidy the pantry and do a Christmas Shelf .

DoreenGrey · 02/10/2026 17:06

Good move on the pigs in blankets - I always find they’re thin on the ground when you want to buy them around Christmas time.

I have asked DH to hide the Treeselets as they are always in danger of demolition before the season.

They are really addictive. Once I start eating them I can't stop.

caringcarer · 02/10/2026 17:17

Not food yet but last week I bought some Xmas long sleeved T shirts for all of us. Our old Xmas jumpers were getting a bit oldf

Astra53 · 02/10/2026 18:09

Yes. I am hosting this year and want to spread the cost and not leave it all until December.

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 02/10/2026 19:11

Today’s M&S trip (I only popped in for milk) resulted in a pouch of turkey gravy, some posh cranberry & port jelly, and two heavily reduced frozen desserts - NY cheesecake and a pistachio & raspberry roulade. We are away until a few days before Xmas so I’m just picking stuff up when I see it, to go with my M&S turkey/nut roast/veg pack order. Also picked up vacuum packed chestnuts the other day.
