Christmas ideas for a four year old who loves planes and maps

I have a 4 year old who loves flying/airplanes and the world/maps.

So I'd love to get him some decent airplane toys but only seem to find tat on Amazon.

And the globes I've come across are either a little babyish or too complicated for him.

Please share any links or similar stuff your kids has loved along these lines. Thanks!!

Not toys or globes but my son loves the Usbourne map mazes book: https://usborne.com/gb/map-maze-book-9781474921466

He also really likes this atlas (it says first atlas but it's more suitable for 4/5 year olds than younger children):

You can also get some great world map/flag jigsaws of varying sizes and difficulty, if he's into puzzles!

If you know anyone going away soon, most airlines sell models, time to start a collection?

Thank you. I've just bought the first Atlas as he'd love that and is on a really good deal.

@bababamama good idea, thank you. I think a few friends/family have some long hauls planned for after xmas so will see if they can pick some good sets up on their return journeys. Not in time for this year, but good for birthday or other general pressies.

Also Lego has a 4+ plane set

Teach him to map read? So a local OS map (the orange one has fences and other useful stuff), compass.

Binoculars! Good for planes and also nice on the map reading walks. Good small size binoculars which focus properly, not toy ones.

My son had a vtech globe and loved it!
Disney Planes movie.
Day trip to go and watch planes land and take off at your nearest airport
Visit to a plane museum

A map rug
a kite
a rocket stomper
a pilot costume

Chad Valley does a magnetic world map puzzle which would definitely be suitable for a 4yo

Oh yes, had my eye on that a while - he also loves Lego. Rather annoyingly, it look like it was heavily reduced on Amazon until today! It's not a fortune so he'll still get it either from myself or I'll suggest to GP's, but I'd still rather pay less if I can.

Some great ideas I'd not thought of here, thank you. I'm looking at them all. I may need to get an additional job.

The Playmobil City airport is very detailed. It comes with a control tower, plane, tug car, passengers etc…

Has he been to Duxford yet? Not only are loads of planes it has an excellent large relatively newly built plane themed playground.

We had the Playmobil airport, aeroplane, check-in desk, flight attendant with trolley, hotel with bellboy and minibus. It was all fabulous, the check-in desk even had teeny tickets!

Big map of the world for the wall and some stickers so you can mark up where people are going if family.
On the OS website you can get a custom map with your post code in the middle, so you can look up local sites / footpaths etc and get used to reading it.

Depending on where you live but if you're anywhere near Surrey take him to Brooklands Museum to go and see some real planes.

BertieBotts · 18/09/2026 16:14

Playmobil stuff is really great for DC who like detailed models that you can play with and all the accessories etc. Or Lego, there are Lego planes though will probably be tricky to assemble at age 4.

If he's more into realistic detail and won't play "small world" as much then you can get some good models by the companies that make things like model trains and trucks, though the prices can get crazy once you get into the "adult hobby collector" market - looking at good quality vehicle toys might be a more affordable starting point.

There are some fantastic books about maps, lots of which can just be looked at for now and then more depth/detail later on when he is older.

A globe perhaps? Children's world atlas?

CBAwithallthethings · 18/09/2026 16:21

my son was massively into planes when he was younger, had loads of Lego, Playmobil and die cast models.
also had a playmat/rug that was like a runway, pilots outfit, top trumps plane cards and a foam glider launcher toy from Amazon that was cheap but a big hit

Pernicketywishes · 18/09/2026 16:54

I was going to say the Lego airport too.
if you live in the SW there’s the Aerospace museum for a trip to see Concorde which is very cool.

I’m sure there’s a really good Usborne book about aeroplanes. ✈️
