Hello all, and welcome to this lovely space for our continued chats.

A bit of background for anyone not familiar with this topic:
The Nigel Slater Christmas Chronicles readalong usually takes place here on Mumsnet between November and February each year - the Christmas Chronicles being a book written by Nigel Slater full of winter recipes and anecdotes - It has been running for a few years, and the contributors collectively decided it would be nice to have it running all year round.

So here it is. It is a place to appreciate all things Nigel-esque. Think seasonal food and recipes, enjoyment of nature, gardening, appreciation of the weather, and sharing of news and small moments of joy. It's a calm, cosy space for gentle chat and merriment so pull up a chair, grab a drink and relax.

A very hearty welcome to friends new and old

N.B. The Christmas Chronicles thread proper will start in late October, ready for the book beginning on 1st November (seems a long way off, but will be here before we know it!)

Ive just looked up Forcemeat properly for the first time and thought I'd share:

The word comes from the French word farcir ("to stuff") and the English word force (an alteration of farce). It is also historically known as farce.

Farce. How marvellous!!

Some gorgeous pictures today. Beautiful horse @piscofrisco I hope he brings you much joy.
Looking very glamorous for the wedding @Bimblesalong When you mentioned the ceremonial sword arch I was reminded of a wedding I went to a long time ago, of two farmers, which had a ceremonial pitchfork arch!
Very chilly and autumnal here. Been out for a walk at a local country park. Certainly blew some cobwebs away! Trees still looking remarkably green, everything seems quite late this year.
DH cooking tonight, sausage casserole which feels just right for the weather. Just pondering doing some baked apples for pudding. Haven't had them for years but they popped into my head the other day and I really fancy one.
Hope you are on the mend @RainbowZebraWarrior
Have a good evening all x

Gah. Also meant to say what a gorgeous outfit @Bimblesalong and you and DH (?) compliment each other beautifully. Smart as carrots nine times sliced as my old Sargeant used to say.

I missed this too! You look fabulous @Bimblesalong and DH is the perfect accessory! Protest as cover for mindless rampage is an excellent summary for events in France @frozendaisy. Not helped by the heavy-handed tactics of the riot police who sometimes appear to be actively encouraging a ruck.

CrushingOnRubies · Yesterday 19:43

@Bimblesalongyou and your DH look lovely. Glad you had a wonderful time

@LillianGishBlimey. I can’t find the words but the news on Paris sounds quite frightening and concerning

a more chilled day here. Roast at the in laws and FIL came over to help DP fit some solar panels on the roof.

HannahDefoesSpringFling · Yesterday 20:15

@Markknopflersheadband I baked some bramley apples last week stuffed with chopped dates and macadamia and some marmalade. Nice.

@Bimblesalong beautiful photo

Sending thoughts to those in Paris. Hope things settle soon.

piscofrisco · Today 09:49

oh yes you look lovely @Bimblesalong. The dress looks suitably swishy! Best in show!

Take care @LillianGishand I do hope DH is ok.

your dad might be right @frozendaisyperhaps I have just unwittingly done the ultimate bit of prepping for Armageddon!

I hope they do the pub up properly @RainbowZebraWarrior
It’s criminal what people do to lovely old buildings sometimes

I now fancy a baked apple @Markknopflersheadband. I Might do one for Troy!

and a big hello to every one else.

I’ve woken with a huge lump inside my eye this morning and blurred vision so currently waiting to be seen in urgent care where the pharmacist sent me after taking a peek at it. This is not what I need just now.

The thread neddy was fine when I went to him at 6 this morning. Came to see me, quite friendly like, at the gate and eating like, well, a horse. Thankyou all for the good wishes for him, I am very smitten with him already. DH has barely seen me since he arrived :)

a lovely Monday to all

I had somehow missed your magnificent horse @piscofrisco - what a beauty! And Troy is a great name. I have since had time for a proper catch up and am now listening to I know that my Redeemer Liveth (to cries of “Too early!” From DS whose uni is still blockaded and wonders why I am playing my Christmas playlist). Thanks @leporello - that must have been a spine tingling moment indeed. I can’t believe we are about to crack open the CCs - the run-up has been so summery this year, though it’s much colder today and I will need a jacket for a walk through the Bois de Vincennes with my friend this afternoon. Not sure I’ll be able to keep
up with two threads so I might switch over the the new one for the duration.

RainbowZebraWarrior · Today 11:22

Ouch that sounds nasty @piscofrisco Hope you get sorted in urgently care asap.

I just found these in my purse as I had forgotten I'd bought them yesterday. DD was overwhelmed at the market so went to stand outside whilst I quickly looked for some enamel badges I'd seen on a stall a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't see them, so thought they had been sold, but upon asking, the stallholder produced them from her hoodie pocket!

Off to pin them to my denim bag. I am - in my head at least - an eternal teenager!

waiting to be seen-likely to be here some time

martha79 · Today 12:57

Oh no @piscofrisco, I hope you get seen soon and they can help fix it easily. I'm glad to hear that Mr Troy Nigel Frisco is doing well.

Hope things are soon calmer around you @LillianGish

Love the tapes @RainbowZebraWarrior - I recently got my old stereo system set up again and found an old mixtape in the tape deck!

Running an all day event today and feeling a bit grim - at least it's online although honestly the last thing I need is 6 hours on Zoom. Trying to resist takeaway and biscuits to get through, and do some healthy snacking instead.

Still waiting?

leporello · Today 14:01

Hope you've been seen @piscofrisco, Mr Troy needs you!

I need those badges for my 80s school bag @RainbowZebraWarrior, they are so cool.

Dd1 and I went to see the new Sense & Sensibility film yesterday, a bit trepidatious as I love the 90s Ang Lee version so much but it was a pleasant surprise. The casting of the male characters was less good but it hardly mattered as the bond and love between the sisters was given paramount importance and they were very good. Fiona Shaw as Mrs Jennings - a character that can often get dismissed as a mere plot facilitator- was absolutely outstanding.

Bimblesalong · Today 16:26

Fingers crossed @piscofrisco

piscofrisco · Today 18:09

I was seen at 3 pm. They couldn’t say what it is or what to do about it, so I’ve to go back tomorrow morning at 9.20 when the senior eye doctor is there. This is not filling me with confidence :(
