I'm looking at finding some coloured lights, not flashing, like we had growing up. Going for nostalgia this year 🎄

I have so much Christmas stuff collected over many years and found the last few years I found it all a bit overwhelming and too much. So this year will be very pared back and simple. We have also decorated the kitchen/sitting/dining areas and have new furniture in the living room and decorated the hall, stairs and landing. So I think things will feel different anyway.

Planning on getting all the Christmas stuff down from the attic in early October and having a good sort out.

I love the idea of getting the decs down early and sorting them, but I have so many that I wouldn’t have the space to keep them down until December.

i have visions of purpose bought boxes with lovely labels all lined up in a row. Silver baubles. Red baubles. Tablewear. Etc

Reality is a random selection of battered boxes that I have no idea the contents of until they are turfed out on the floor. All higgedly piggledy. Stuff everywhere.

@SlatternIsMyMiddleName - the reality is mine is pretty much like that too! But I’m trying to be more organised. It’s a gradual process I think. Over the years I have managed to be organised with some of it. But not all. Last year I did manage to do a box for red baubles and one for white and silver and another for other colours.

I got old fashioned coloured lights in Aldi a couple of years ago, and there were even more last year. Bit plasticky, but there were flower and lantern shapes, and they are a nostalgic delight. Two minor issues; they have 7 flashing options before the on option, and so I have to push the button 8 times whenever I turn them on, also the strings are quite short. 3 sets on my 6 foot tree - I REALLY wish all the flashing options were AFTER the non-flashing one 😂

I have those! Oh they are beautiful- I’m a 70’s child so very nostalgic for me but yes the button pressing is a faf!

I think I’ve decided I’m doing one tree with crystal/glass transparent decs which I’m hoping will be so pretty and twinkly. If anyone has seen great (not expensive) ideas for this please let me know

This year I shall mostly be decorating the house with reindeer heads on sticks.

Ha ha ha 😂😂😂

We’ve had the Aldi coloured fairy lights in the past, and also got the ‘pickwick’ style ones from here

Theyre lovely and nostalgic (although don’t have that soft twinkle that I remember!) but none of them lasted very long, I think the second year we got the pickwick ones out they didn’t work, and the Aldi ones did maybe 2 or 3 years.

Last year we went for these - DH wasn’t a fan but they made DD very happy, and were long enough for our massive tree. We seem to be going for an overall colourful disco vibe whilst DD is still young, I’d quite like to go back to classic red green and gold with warm white lights but this is fun for now!

We don’t need anything really for inside, but I’d like something for the porch and potentially some lights in the back garden this year.

Please don’t judge me but pink/ purple/ bright green tinsel to put around all the pictures in the house to crazy it up a bit! (It’s been A Weird Year!!)

Personally I'd rather see that then the endless amounts of monotone/gold houses that have no colour at all..

lxn889121 · 08/09/2026 02:17

For me, this will be an annoying year because I've moved into a new house, so there will be plenty of new places to decorate... But because of moving into a new house I can't spend money on new decorations!

The only essential is that this is the first place my family has had with stairs, so I want to do something with them.. not sure what yet.
