Christmas Conundrum

My partner (35M) and I (31F) have been together for around 10 years. We’re both professionals and don’t have children. We love hosting friends, cooking, going out for nice dinners, and generally enjoy a fairly relaxed, grown-up lifestyle.

For the past couple of Christmases we’ve spent the day with close friends who are also child-free. It’s been very low-key and indulgent - champagne, oysters, great food, good wine and long conversations.

This year we’ve agreed to host my partner’s family. His parents have downsized and his siblings have had more children, so we’re now the only ones with a house big enough for everyone at Christmas.

I know it’s only July, but I’m already feeling a bit anxious. There will be four children (aged 5, 4, 3 and 1), and we’re the only child-free couple. His nieces and nephews are lovely, but they’re also quite full-on. Family gatherings tend to involve a lot of shouting, squabbling and general chaos, and we usually come home feeling pretty overwhelmed.

I’m genuinely not trying to sound judgemental or anti-children - it’s just very different from the Christmases we’ve come to know and love.

Has anyone been in a similar position? I’d really like to keep some of the elements we enjoy (beautiful food, nice wine, a bit of a luxury feel) while still making it fun and welcoming for a family with young children. Any tips on striking that balance without coming across as a complete snob?

Have all of the fancy things, just expect toys, noise and a bit of chaos. If you can try and do something different for the children eg if you have a luxurious pudding get them something fun, m&s are great for this. I love a grown up Christmas but actually children give it a different type of excitement. If you live somewhere where a nice walk is possible do that, gives them chance to burn some energy outside of your house. Also for brownie point make sure you have AA and AAA batteries they are bound to have toys that need them and you'll be a superstar if you can come to the rescue

Also plan a champagne and canapes adult night with friends pre or post Christmas so you get a little of what you like too

Oh also Christmas crackers get something lovely for the adults and something fun for the children they'll appreciate it, even if they don't match!

Have lots of cheap presents to bribe kids…. Chicolate scavenger hunt?

How long are they with you? Can you treat Christmas Day as a write off but have a lovely luxe Christmas Eve or Boxing Day?

And don’t offer next year. Suggest everyone clubs together for an Air BnB.

so we’re now the only ones with a house big enough for everyone at Christmas

Start managing expectations for next Christmas or you might find yourself unwittingly volunteering to be the default option until someone moves to a bigger house.

Is this Christmas Day you’re hosting? No chance to swap to another day? Could you arrange somewhere that you need to go to in the evening, so everyone has to leave by a certain time? The children are very young so I can’t imagine they’d stay too late anyway, but you might feel it’s easier to manage if there is a clear end point, and you can leave at 6pm to go to your friend or something like that?

Are they staying with you or just coming over for the day? If they are staying then it will be hectic and all about the kids all day. Definitely send them all out for a walk at some point.

If they are coming for the day do a nice grown up breakfast with champagne for you and dh.
