It's too early for gift shopping or even planning, unless there is something you're 100% sure would still be interesting and useful by Christmas. I'd say tickets to events that are planned in advance (like artists/bands tours, ballet/opera tickets, etc) would be worth looking at but then again, you need to be sure that's something the person really likes AND would still like. With teens and kids it's hard to guess because their interests might change overnight.
Surely there are more or less generic gifts like calendars (you can make personalized ones with photos and birthdays) or gift cards to beauty salons/stores the person is frequent at, but it's worth waiting still.
Smaller items, like arts and crafts stuff, lip balms, bath bombs, scented candles could be bought whenever, but then again, you need to be sure they will be needed.

I don't know about trends lol but for myself books are always on my Xmas list. We are looking to get a ps5 for the boys this year as their main gift, a joint gift. My daughter will be 6 so anything licensed characters or arts and crafts is a winner. She has gotten into nail polish (the kiddy peel off/wash off kind) so a nail kit will probably be snuck on her list lol x
