Only Flu for myself

Norovirus when DS was a baby (he's now mid 30s)

Upthenorth · 28/12/2025 21:51

I seem to get ill often on Christmas. Tonsillitis, flue, stomach bugs… I think it’s the being busy keeping me going and as soon as I slow down I get something or other.
Usually get through the day itself ok.
No issues this year luckily!

WilfredsPies · 28/12/2025 21:53

It was a rotten cold. It knocked me for six and I couldn’t get off the sofa. I cancelled everyone, didn’t even bother cooking for myself; my mum brought me up a dinner. I had a couple of mouthfuls and went back to sleep.

It was actually quite peaceful 😁

Hospitalised with a kidney infection that was turning septic, a few years ago. Thankfully made a full recovery

NarwhalBuddy · 28/12/2025 21:58

Kidney stones. Worst. Thing. Ever.

MargotMoon · 28/12/2025 21:59

My back went on Christmas Eve a few years ago when I was hoovering - acute sciatica. I was pretty incapacitated for the best part of a week. Then I had a tonsillectomy a week before Christmas a few years ago. Agony but worth it.

ThereIsATInWater · 28/12/2025 22:00

What they call "walking pneumonia "....though didn't do much walking!

Anotheryeargone · 28/12/2025 22:01

Now...
Popped my shoulder out a few months ago and although back in it's rightful position it's left a rotor cuff injury, can't lift or twist arm, pain like I've never had.

Roll on February when I can see a health care professional, bonus if they can help sort the pain.

holjam · 28/12/2025 22:02

A severe gallstone attack. The most horrific pain ever.

anonocakey · 28/12/2025 22:02

Stonking migraine a couple of Christmases ago. I had to go straight back to bed. Missed all the present opening and my poor mum had to do dinner. Resurfaced about 7pm feeling like death.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 28/12/2025 22:03

Severe ear infection that kicked in during Christmas dinner one year. So painful! Then an ingredient in the antibiotic they gave me made me sick too.

LoserWinner · 28/12/2025 22:03

Complicated fracture of my wrist - slipped on black ice on a hill in the dark. A&E were brilliant - lots of gas and air - but failed to align it properly, and the long Christmas break mean that when I went back in for a check up, it had partially healed in a bit of a mess. I had to have surgery to re-break it under general anaesthetic and inset pins. I had to start a new job and settle into a new home in early January with my arm in a sling.

PurpleFlower1983 · 28/12/2025 22:04

Horrendous tonsillitis a couple of years ago, literally could not get out of bed. It hurt to breathe. It was awful. That was boxing day though.

CornishTiger · 28/12/2025 22:05

I had a laparoscopy one year ago couple of days before Xmas. At least it meant husband was home to help with very young children.

The general anaesthetic knocked me right out. Plus I struggled with the recovery.

NotMyCircusNotMyProblem · 28/12/2025 22:19

I fell down a step on Christmas Eve, fractured the cuboid bone in my foot and chipped my cheek bone. I was on holiday in Cape Verde at the time. I didn’t seek medical attention, was due back to UK on Boxing Day and was worried I wouldn’t be allowed to fly if I was in a plaster cast. It was agony.

SnowDaysAndBadLays · 28/12/2025 22:22

I currently have a broken shoulder.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 28/12/2025 22:26

Bad covid when single parenting a baby alone

Gliblet · 28/12/2025 22:28

Fractured kneecap with multiple ligament strains in the same knee joint - couldn't drive, couldn't get into a car or sit in it for any length of time comfortably, and couldn't host so DH and I ordered a load of party type food for delivery and planned a day of boxset bingeing and snacking. Bloody Asda didn't deliver (but didn't tell us they'd cancelled our order til everywhere else was shut) so instead we had a day of cheese on toast and tinned soup.

TranscendentTiger · 28/12/2025 22:29

As a teenager, 'flu, migraine and my first period (had horrendous period pain and diarrhea which I then got every month for years then I discovered I had endometriosis).

ThroughTheRedDoor · 28/12/2025 22:31

Not me. My sister. She was doing chrostmas dinner at my mom's house and had decoded that she wasn't washing up. So she bought foil trays to cook in. The oven was a waist high one.

She'd put oil in one of the trays for the roast potatoes. Went to get it out and forgot that the tray wouldn't be as heavy. The scorching hot oil went up in the air and all over her front. She was wearing a lacy dress that basically melted into her breasts. She was seriously burned.

Straight to A&E. We were there for 12 hours and she spent the next year getting it sorted. It was nearly 17 years ago and the scar is still really pronounced.

That was one of the worst but there have been others....

TheFairyCaravan · 28/12/2025 22:33

I gave birth on Christmas Eve and ended up with an awful tear because DS2 came out really quickly, with my waters, with his arm above his head like Superman. I couldn’t sit comfortably, I had severe SPD and couldn’t walk and we had a just turned 2 yo. So it was quite a lot to cope with.

DDIL had an emergency C section on Boxing Day 2yrs ago, so that was eventful too.

FiatLuxAdAstra · 28/12/2025 22:34

Cancer - specifically recovering from surgery with radiation to start after New Years,

SedentaryCat · 28/12/2025 22:41

Two years ago I had sciatica. Could barely move. Turns out I had two herniated discs that still haven't quite healed.

Previous years it was the flu, which usually came on at around 4pm on Christmas day and wiped me out for the following week. Until I started having a flu jab.

Kickinthenostalgia · 28/12/2025 22:41

I had the Australian flu back in 2017/2018.. started on the 22nd dec, with a high fever. Luckily fever broke by Christmas eve, not much appetite though. The entire ordeal lasted 23 days before I was symptom free.
I remember years ago when I was a child, about 6/7, one Christmas I literally slept through the entire day. Woke up opened presents, went to sleep and woke up at my nans, couldn’t eat, I remember my mum left me at my nans as we were due back Boxing Day. Woke up on Boxing Day like nothing even happened. Was right as rain. Still a mystery. No one else was sick…

Chiefangel · 28/12/2025 22:46

Flu. I caught it in the local pub on the 22nd December some years back, the pub was packed and only 3 of us caught it. I completely missed Christmas and New year and was ill for 6 weeks. Have never been so ill in my life. Needed help getting to the toilet. Ended up on steroids and doctor said I was close to being admitted to hospital.
