If you were invited for Christmas Dinner or longer, did you take anything? If so, what?

Teenagerantruns · 26/12/2025 14:20

My DD and her partner came here, they bought drinks, cocktail ingredients chocs and biscuits, l wouldnt have cared if they came with nothing. Oh and they cooked Christmas dinner l just bought the stuff.
I would always turn up with at least drinks.

ResusciAnnie · 26/12/2025 14:21

My parents brought cheese, as I’d asked them to. Also brought a bowl for the trifle at my request. Also brought 2 tubs of chocs.

VERY restrained for my mother who usually saddles us with loads of stuff that will sit in a cupboard for years 👏👏👏

Nincompoo · 26/12/2025 14:22

I would ask if there was anything they wanted me to take, in my family it’s usually a pudding. I’d also always take a couple of bottles of wine and maybe some
chocolates/snacks depending on the host.

Overthebow · 26/12/2025 14:23

We hosted but our guests brought cake, wine and cheese.

Happyinheels · 26/12/2025 14:24

I took wine, beer, soft drinks, sausage stuffing, red cabbage and a box of chocolates.

BCBird · 26/12/2025 14:26

Went for the day, took 2 Christmas puddings, made a dessert and contributed to the cost of meat. Even if someone said nothing in would actively make a point of finding out what was needed and take it.

TheTowerAtMidnight · 26/12/2025 14:29

Chocolates and biscuits to share. I was at my parents' house, and I knew they didn't want/need anything else.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 26/12/2025 14:31

We went to my parents for a couple of hours after lunch, I took a fine bottle of bubbly knowing they wouldn’t buy such a thing for themselves but would love it, but they don’t expect us to bring anything.

DarkForces · 26/12/2025 14:31

I hosted but I thought you were asking what people pinched to take home 😂

Sunshineo · 26/12/2025 14:36

We took champagne, soft drinks and Christmas pudding (and gifts).

TheChosenTwo · 26/12/2025 14:41

We hosted and provided everything but everyone that came brought some wine as a very kind gift and a few bought some nice boxes of chocolates - everyone that left went home with boxes of food for today - mains and puddings!

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 26/12/2025 14:42

Two nice bottles of wine, a crate of beers, five cheeses, crackers and grapes and apple

Swissmeringue · 26/12/2025 14:46

My mum, my in-laws and dh's brother and family came to stay. They all asked what they could bring but I said nothing, so they turned up with various bottles of fizz and snacks but nothing substantial. Which was perfect as I like to sort it all myself.

Surely if you're a guest you just ask the host then bring whatever they would like you to?

Jewelanemone · 26/12/2025 14:47

Around to BIL and SIL (DH's brother and his wife), we took a huge selection of cheeses, pâté, charcuterie, biscuits for cheese, crisps, nuts and pickles for a buffet tea. Also crémant x 2, white malbec x 2 and red wine x 2, plus beer.

They put on such a fantastic spread for our Christmas meal that nobody touched what we brought - too full!

We're going round next week to help them eat it all. ☺️

DefiniteMeteor · 26/12/2025 14:49

A ham
Three bottles of wine

OohRains · 26/12/2025 14:51

Bottle of Mumm and my homemade cranberry sauce

Sprogonthetyne · 26/12/2025 14:52

Reading to get ideas for next year because I never know what to bring, so always end up taking wine, that never actually gets drank. I tried asking I'd there was anything spercific that we needed, but didn't get told anything.

Fifthtimelucky · 26/12/2025 14:56

We went to my sister’s this year. She normally comes to me and it is established practice that the person who does the travelling brings a vegan main and a pudding.

I took a mushroom and chestnut Wellington (to be eaten by my vegan daughter and her 3 vegetarians), some vegan gravy, a vegan chocolate tart, and a normal Christmas pudding (bought, not homemade).

I also took a bottle of Prosecco and nice tin of biscuits to leave with them.

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/12/2025 15:07

We’re going to my DSis tomorrow along with other siblings. We agree beforehand who is bringing what course - I usually make and/or buy a dessert, plus cream. Always take red and white wine and some champagne. Oh and an AF drink for me and DP as we don’t drink. Works well - but we all get on which helps.

I think that’s fine, I’d never ask guests to bring anything and certainly nothing substantial because in the event of them waking up on Christmas Day with the flu/car troubles/anything else and they can’t come you’re a bit stuck if that person was meant to be bringing a main dish or something else that was important.
Our friend yesterday invited a friend over to hers, friend was bringing the fizz and pudding - friend called her in the morning to say she had a temperature and couldn’t come - my friend then had no pudding or fizz!
If you’re hosting you tend to know what you need and just sort it yourself so that you know everyone is catered for and you’re not relying on anyone else.

A crate of wine, a dessert and a cheese board 💕 My DDs first Christmas hosting in her new home 🏠

Philandbill · 26/12/2025 15:13

As arranged a Christmas pudding, brandy butter, custard, DD made a yule log to take, a ham in the slow cooker (fun to transport 😂) and some chocolates.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 26/12/2025 16:11

I went to my sisters, I was in charge of dessert as usual, I bought a homemade vegan chocolate pastry wreath, a shop bought fancy Yule log, a lemon tart and a fancy chocolate cheesecake. I also popped in to visit a friend for a drink and bought a nice bottle of prosecco and some chocolates.

FenceBooksCycle · 26/12/2025 16:18

BiL was hosting (he's a single dad, DH's brother). We took : oven ready vegetarian thing for DH (only vegetarian there) and different oven-ready thing for ASD-food-anxiety-issues DC. Bottle of wine & 6pk beer (of which DH&I drank 1 beer each, we aren't big drinkers) and an M&S posh pudding. MIL also a guest and brought a different (but home-made) pudding (so there would be choice, no competition) and a side-dish.
