If you were invited for Christmas Dinner or longer, did you take anything? If so, what?

My mum brought with her a pudding she’d made (she did ask first).

But she also brought two bottles of Cremant, a bottle of Fleurie, a box of mince pies, a pack of canapés, a box of cheese biscuit bites, a bag of fancy chilli nibbles, three different types of homemade biscuits. Oh and also some clementines and, for reasons unclear, some grapes. She didn’t ask about any of those and we needed none of them but I’m obviously grateful and it was incredibly sweet of her.

She also appears to have transferred £80 into my bank account ‘for the turkey’ even though she’s vegetarian and doesn’t eat it.

Summerhillsquare · 26/12/2025 16:55

Little fiddly smoked salmon appetisers I'd made, beer, rum, pop, and their Christmas presents. Oh and home made gingerbread. Only small quantities though.

Maddy70 · 26/12/2025 16:57

Always ask what I can contribute, crackers, pudding etc. Plus I bring drinks

Poppins17 · 26/12/2025 17:08

Staying with DB - arrived tea time Christmas Eve and leaving tomorrow.

We gifted them £50 voucher and candle and a sweatshirt each.

We bought a bag full of goodies from M&S including panatone, fizz, crisps, chocolates, biscuits and chocolates.

Whilst we have been here we have been to the pub and we have paid for drinks and taxis.

I’m hoping that’s all enough as they have been great hosts.

chunkyBoo · 26/12/2025 17:40

We took a large dessert and plenty of wine - I did check with the hosts first, and we were also very generous with the gifts as we had t had to fork out a small fortune for food

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/12/2025 17:54

A load of cheese straws, 3.5 dozen mince pies, a big piece of gammon, cooked, a 🎄pudding, brandy butter and cream.

Mrspatmoresapprentice · 26/12/2025 17:57

I always host, I am happy to do it, but I’ve lost count of the number of times family have turned up for Christmas empty handed. They stay 2/3/4 days and bring literally nothing. I just wouldn’t!
I remember one year asking PIL to bring a cheese board and they brought a pack of baby bells and a slither of cheddar….for 10 people 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

mamaduckbone · 26/12/2025 17:59

In-laws brought a trifle! They don't drink though and have offered us some money towards food, which we've refused.

DarkForces · 26/12/2025 14:31

I hosted but I thought you were asking what people pinched to take home 😂

Same! My Mum came, said her feet were cold so lent her my slippers and she went home in them 😂 she did bring fudge so guess that is a fair swap!

13RidgmontRoad · 26/12/2025 18:13

I always bring a posh bottle of EVOO if I’m not asked to bring anything specific.

ApolloandDaphne · 26/12/2025 18:40

We went to DD and her partner. We already paid for the ham and the turkey plus gave them money for food. Took loads of wine and fizz plus a nice Christmassy flower arrangement. They have a big house and wanted to host but have less money than we have so we were happy to help out.

jano69 · 26/12/2025 18:46

Two bottles of champagne, Christmas flowers, 4 bottles of sparkling water, cordial, 12 Yorkshire pudddings and 2 tubs of custard.

lacquershimmer · 26/12/2025 19:15

A case (12 bottles)of wine, case of beer, loads of soft drinks. All the food for Boxing Day, plus we prepared and served it so hosts could have a rest after Christmas Day big feast. Baked Christmas cookies and some cakes to take too.

Americasfavouritefightingfrenchman · 26/12/2025 19:46

We went to my parents for Christmas afternoon/today and we took Champagne, Pinot Noir, couple of 4 packs of beer, cheeseboard for Christmas Day and Christmas crackers & a dessert for today.

We've been sent home with some turkey leftovers and part of the cheeseboard as mum said they’d not use them. All told feel we have done well.

DuckyLuck · 26/12/2025 20:03

We hosted and did all the shopping bar the beef which my parents ordered and bought (£140! But fed 10)

PILs turned up with nothing and enjoyed a delicious 3 course meal, waited on hand and foot.

Caterina99 · 26/12/2025 20:18

We hosted. My parents brought the turkey crown, some canapés my mum made and a bottle of champagne and some wine.

Oh and the crackers because I forgot to buy them and my mum happened to have some (phew)

ChateauProvence · 26/12/2025 20:24

Desserts, red wine, magnum of rose wine, 2 bottles of champagne and a case of beer

Ineffable23 · 26/12/2025 20:26

Cheese, various non-alcoholic beverages for the non-booze drinkers, a bottle of port. Only there for a meal so not the same as if I was staying for days and days.

Glitchymn1 · 26/12/2025 20:27

DarkForces · 26/12/2025 14:31

I hosted but I thought you were asking what people pinched to take home 😂

I did too 🤣

I’d ask what to bring, I’d always take drinks though, snacks with a long shelf life that didn’t require fridge/freezer. Sometimes (not at Christmas) I’ve taken platters for the teens which were whipped away gratefully 😂 by said teens, just simple things like pizzas, rolls, sandwiches, crisps, cheese/pineapple).

blankcanvas3 · 26/12/2025 20:51

We hosted but everyone brought alcohol, my parents brought cheese and dessert, BIL brought crisps and other snacky bits, son’s gf brought more dessert and chocolate

burntoutnurse · 26/12/2025 20:55

Three different vienetta ice creams
home made apple pie
custard
cream

3 bottles of wine
crate of beer
maltesers

ohyesido · 26/12/2025 21:03

I took banoffee pie to my FIL’s regular Sunday dinners, it was always accepted with a beaming smile and a cheek kiss. I honestly thought it was his favourite dessert.

I found out yesterday after 15 years that he can’t stand banoffee pie and he simply didn’t have the heart to tell me and dampen my enthusiasm

MumChp · 26/12/2025 21:09

Flowers, Bailey, 3 bottles of wine, homemade mince pies and nice coffee.

TheLurpackYears · 26/12/2025 21:10

DarkForces · 26/12/2025 14:31

I hosted but I thought you were asking what people pinched to take home 😂

Me too, I thought it was about cheeky fuckers.

Gingernaut · 26/12/2025 21:11

Something that doesn't need cooking

Snacky savouries, non-alcoholic drinks, whatever I'm asked to bring
