Most consoles need software updates and games downloading which can take a few hours along with making new accounts etc.
It can be disappointing to get an amazing new toy only to find you have to sit and stare at loading bars for ages until it's actually functional. Some years the number of people all updating at the same time has crashed the console networks or slowed them to a crawl.
It may be worth plugging it in and getting it ready to play before putting it back in the box and wrapping it.
