I made a very hasty decision earlier and bought a cockerel for Christmas dinner, butcher said I won’t regret it but I am already! Any advice anyone?

A cockerel??

We are having a cockerel cushion from booths. It can’t be that much different than chicken surely. We are selling it as a big chicken.

We did this last year! It was great

I’ve had it before it’s slightly gamier than a hen. It was nice though. Lots of butter under the skin to keep it moist and a slow roast.

Sinittaadancers · 23/12/2025 14:55

Much nicer than chicken! Enjoy!

hussherbye · 23/12/2025 14:55

Yep, a cockerel aka a male chicken. Bigger than a chicken but apparently more flavoursome but without the dryness of a turkey 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cock-a-doodle? Do! 😄🐔

Lovely bit of squirrel.

Thingamebobwotsit · 23/12/2025 15:00

We have done this before. I can't say I noticed a massive difference to chicken once you have added all the yummy extras and herbs, but was nicer than goose and less dry than turkey. Good value for the amount of meat, if I remember correctly.

How exciting! No advice

myrtleWilson · 23/12/2025 15:02

We did capon a couple of times. I used Nigella’s turkey brine for it and it was delicious!

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 23/12/2025 15:04

I usually do a capon - so much nicer than a turkey

LattePatty · 23/12/2025 15:04

We had cockerel a few years ago. It was tasty
