Plus chutney homemade, crackers and french bread, fig, Pickled walnuts, grapes and apples

looking forward to the Christmas Eve fridge thread!

I have the usual crackers. I used to buy one of those biscuits for cheese, but we did not like half of them. I get grapes and figs, plus some fruit cake.
as for cheese, we love Red Fox, Wensleydale with cranberries, the one with chives in it, cheddar, whatever I see in the supermarket on offer!

Yours sounds lovely and posh OP! I’ve been asked to bring the cheese board this year by my host but I’m not much of a connoisseur (understatement).

Ive got some very vintage cheddar
red fox
wensleydale/cranberry
Gouda
Stilton
st agur
port salou
oatcakes and crackers
a bought onion chutney
HM pineapple chutney
HM pickled onions.

would love to know if this sounds ok or what I could add to it. Preferably from a supermarket

AANursinghome · 20/12/2025 16:30

Re the figs, do you eat them raw with cheese? Also OP which is your favourite from your list?

Catpiece · 20/12/2025 16:31

Cheddar and some Wensleydale with apricots in it.

Alexadidzammomarryjackie · 20/12/2025 16:36

St Felicien is a great choice OP.

Off to the farm shop tomorrow to get ours. But got some nice Cheshire and Jarlesburg today.
Hoping to get some wild garlic yarg.

There’s a cheese full thread here too if anyone wants anymore cheese related chat 🧀🧀🧀(never enough cheese)

My only contribution is that DS19 came home today with a hulking wheel of waxed Black Bomber for his Dad for Christmas. Parenting = Achieved.

Question, where are you getting figs this time of year?

sueelleker · 20/12/2025 17:27

Discovered in this month's Waitrose magazine that they had a new cheese from the makers of Red Fox. It's called Silver Fox, and sounds interesting; so I bought some.https://www.beltonfarm.co.uk/product/silver-fox-200g/

Hopefully from the Waitrose van in a couple of hours.

Re the figs, do you eat them raw with cheese?

Not quite in our case. I cut them in a cross shape (like the bottom of a Brussels sprout, I guess), poke in a nice chunk of semi hard goat's cheese by preference, ewe's milk if not available and top with one of the following combinations before grilling until it's all soft and slightly caramelising;

Pomegranate molasses, sumac and pink peppercorns
Balsamic vinegar, a punchy olive oil (couple of drips) and a strip of lemon peel, black pepper
Raspberry vinegar (couple of drips), frozen blackberry, black pepper
Redcurrant jelly/small bunch of redcurrants
Parma ham/prosciutto

Ours needs to cater for a broad church of cheese lovers and slightly unadventurous eaters. All waiting in the fridge already.

Brie
Camembert
Montagnolo
Gruyere
Snowdonia smoked cheddar
Snowdonia red storm(?)
Wensleydale with mango and ginger (don’t like this myself, but it is a favourite with some of our Christmas guests).

Piccalilli, pickled onions, plum chutney, crackers, olives. Haven’t bought grapes yet, but might manage it later in the week.

mydogisanidiott · 20/12/2025 19:24

If I get figs in will eat them raw. We also got some amazing apples from farmers market

Wicklow bán (brie, a gift)
Cashel blue (a gift, not a big fan so I wouldn't have purchased this myself)
Crozier blue (from the makers of Cashel blue but in another league entirely imo)
Montagnolo
TBC...

I love blue cheese!
