How to give a gift without setting precedent?

My little cousin (now a big bloke) has just started a family. I'm very protective over him because he's been through a lot. He doesn't have the best paying job and took on a second job for a bit more cash. We're meeting up over Christmas and I want to bring a present for his baby, but don't want him to feel that he has to get something for my (multiple) kids. Any way to do this diplomatically?

I think it's pretty usual to bring a present for a new baby, isn't it? It's not a Christmas present.

I’d just make it clear to him that you don’t expect anything back. Just give him a lovely gift

New baby gift…. Totally normal. Other
people who don’t otherwise buy him gifts will have done this

mydogisanidiott · 20/12/2025 15:21

Write xxxx first Christmas on the tag

Luxio · 20/12/2025 15:23

Agree with others you're overthinking this. It's a present for his new baby, it doesn't need to be reciprocated by him, it's completely normal to get new babies gifts.

Just say oh I know we don't usually do presents and I'm not changing that, but I saw X and I couldn't resist. They're only tiny once aren't they!

Get New Baby wrapping paper/card.

Not "Christmas" even "Baby's 1st".

TheCurious0range · 20/12/2025 15:25

Also don't wrap it in Christmas paper, wrap in generic paper or put it in a new baby gift bag.

New baby gift. Use appropriate paper, not Christmas paper.

If you haven’t already given a gift for the baby wrap it in “baby gift wrapping” so it’s obvious to all that that’s what it is, not a Xmas present.
