Don't know if this is a thing really. Ds has never shown any interest in the gym but has come back from uni declaring he's joined one as he wants to start rugby! I've been struggling for gifts for him so thought this might be an option as a top-up. Don't want to spend a fortune in case it doesn't stick and he isn't into brands but was wondering what kinds of bags people's sons use for this, what they wear and any other little bits that might be useful.

sports direct have good choice of holdalls and rucksacks
always come in useful even if he doesn’t stick at the gym

Wraps for his hands, protein shakers, protein powder or pre and after work out drinks? I don't know how fit he is but grip tighteners for his hands, mouth guard, boot cleaner?

Bear grips for his hands
Good quality water bottle
Some dry-fit fabric T-shirts
Shoebag for trainers
More expensive but good trainers like Nike Metcons etc.

Good ideas, thank you! I'll get down to Sports Direct!

Get a couple of tops and bottoms that are quick to dry and don’t take up a lot of space in the washing machine.

Hi OP, I work at a university and use the gym.

Almost all the 18yo men there wear - plain Gymshark tshirt, UnderArmour shorts, Nike white socks pulled up, flat training/ lifting shoes or UA or Hoka shoes.

Accessories - lifting gloves, liquid chalk, resistance bands such as from ProIron, water bottle, protein powder or shakes, and poss Bluetooth headphones if he doesn't have (Shokz are good).
