Supermarket run on Monday - what isn't on my list yet?

Planning to dash to Lidl followed by Booths fairly early Monday. My list is very short so I'm sure I've forgotten something!
It's just us 4, with maybe 4 or 5 neighbours coming over on Tues afternoon. Turkey is coming from the butcher on Tues and a veg box on Weds.
So far I have
A few oven bits for Tues afternoon
Puff pastry (for a Christmas tree tear and share - already have mincemeat)
Fake Bailey's
Cheese
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Crisps
Fancy gravy
Fancy custard.

Already have a gingerbread house kit for after Christmas, brandy butter, Christmas pudding.

Eggs, onions, lemons, parsley, bread for crumbs? All the little sundries that always seem to get used up at this time of year and are not main events

bobdylannumber1 · 20/12/2025 12:22

You won't forget dinner items. But washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, fire lighters, batteries, tea lights, ice cubes.pet food toilet paper

drspouse · 20/12/2025 12:30

I love that this is no longer my thread!
We seem to buy a lot in bulk - pet food, loo roll/tissues, washing up liquid and hand soap.

There's a thread somewhere about making bread sauce from scratch, it sounded pretty easy, I never get it because the very thought of it makes me feel unwell!

I have done it before but no time this year

In Ireland you can buy whipped cream which has Baileys in it. I think it’s only available at Christmas time. It’s delicious though!

There's a Carte d'Or Baileys ice cream available now. I just bought some in Tesco.

DeanElderberry · 20/12/2025 14:41

Good call. I usually eat that rather dull 'gf promise bread' because I'm allergic to wheat, but yesterday I couldn't get to the supermarket so made a loaf with spelt flour, thinking it would also be good for bread sauce. Which it would, except it was delicious and I've eaten a lot of it already.

Yeast needs to go on the list so I can make another one.

ThatAgileRosePanda · 20/12/2025 15:09

Cranberry sauce or ingredients to make it, bread sauce (ditto), chocolate, crackers and chutney for the cheese, Christmas cake or mince pies

Yes, it's simple, and you can make it as thick or thin as you like.

I walked round not with a shopping list but a list of what I hope to eat each day until January 1st, and the things I had forgotten but now have are: Batteries; horseradish sauce (to go with smoked fish); readymade custard for lazy trifle.

I was already intending to get salad stuff and clementines.

Mostly sorted now, (I hope).

Please don't eat the batteries 🤪.

DeanElderberry · 20/12/2025 16:47

But batteries, custard and horseradish would be sensational! And original.

I’ve forgotten the Mayo! Luckily there seems to be plenty of shopping days to go Smile

Seems being the operative word.
At least it's one thing.

Disposable roasting trays to make your life easier?

Something non alcoholic for drinks.

More cheese 😋

gogomomo2 · 20/12/2025 16:58

@Hollyhobbi. Yes you can buy cream with baileys in it, or could last year, bought a tub for 10p after Christmas so guess it wasn’t popular (would not pay full price, prefer to add amaretto to normal cream!)

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/12/2025 17:02

Small foil containers for left overs? Plastic containers with lids for left overs (and which can go in the microwave and also useful for people to take home a representative sample of your cooking)?

Incelebration · 20/12/2025 18:12

Do you already have meals for Christmas Eve and Boxing Day? And 23rd lunch? And 27th unless you'll still be eating leftovers?

DeanElderberry · 20/12/2025 20:03

It's only me and I'm sticking with tradition so I don't have to think.

21st, roast ham, baked potato
22nd, leeks and ham in cheese sauce
23rd, curry (frozen, from a supermarket)
24th, fish (salmon and smoked salmon) and salady stuff
25th, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast, Jerusalem artichoke soup for lunch, usual roast doohdahs for dinner. Trifle.
26th, similar to 24th
27th, cold ham and turkey, crisps, salads
28th, Coronation turkey, hot bread
29th, probably herby sausagemeat balls and mash
30th, something easy, pasta carbonara perhaps,
31st, nibbly bits, nuts, dried fruit, cheeses, charcuterie
1st steak

I'll probably be forced to start thinking again after that, if only because the cats will be making utterly bogus allegations about starvation.

I'm getting over flu, and the turkey will probably end up being chicken breast because I haven't much appetite. That will leave me with a kilo and a half of turkey breast in the freezer, which will seem like a good thing eventually.

That is very organised!

Merry Christmas Dance GIF

Do NOT forget to put 'treat for me for organising and cooking' on your list. Mine would be a pomegranate - not for sharing, just for me and my Greek yogurt ... Yours might be alcohol or bubblebath or something chocolate.

drspouse · 23/12/2025 20:13

I did get pomegranate but DD wants it now!
However I also caved to the Coole Swan pressure and ordered some from Amazon. You were all right! However I do think I might go back to Amarula after this.
