Gift for 98 year old Gran

Looking for ideas for my 98, almost 99 year old Gran. She is severely arthritic, so jigsaw puzzles etc aren’t really appropriate. Lives with my mum so doesn’t need much for around the house. She likes doing word puzzles, bird watching, and she’s still fairly active (goes to Wi, groups etc). Always says not to get her anything! We’ve done the usual hot water bottles, pillows, scarves etc over the years.

A monocular or binocular for watching the birds?

CharlotteCChapel · 18/12/2025 11:38

My gran was slightly younger but we always gave her posh items, like marrons glacé or bath Oliver biscuits. Sh was very disciplined so o box of posh chocolates would last a month.

The only thing my Grab really appreciates these days is a really nice bouquet of flowers.

If she likes word puzzles, have you given her a word search book based on the year she was born? Or just “nostalgia” based themes? This has been hugely successful with my partner’s 98 year old relative and it was suggested on here 😊 Amazon has loads of these, many large print.

Vouchers for afternoon tea somewhere fancy, if she's still mobile and has a good appetite.

Purplerain1144 · 18/12/2025 12:41

I would give her a 'voucher' to go out for tea and cake! At that age she probably wants to spend time with you rather than have a gift she maybe wont use

cashmere bed socks - White Company

My gran died at 103! I always bought her chanel
number 5 soap.

bumblebeedum · 18/12/2025 16:27

Pedicure/manicure? Much loved by my gran in her mid 80’s.

moneyadviceplease · 18/12/2025 16:42

Mine absolutely loved some new bone china mugs

GammonAndEgg · 18/12/2025 16:43

I’ve said this on another thread - I bought my 99 yr old gran a scratch card and a helium balloon and she bloody loved it. She said she hadn’t had her own balloon since she was a child. And then she won a fiver!!

I get my elderly mum consumables. This year got her posh biscuits and very posh Turkish delight. She loves things like this as she always says she doesnt need anything for her home. I will sometimes get an m&s voucher so she can buy nice food for herself that her neighbour collects for her.

AlwaysADramaHadEnough · 18/12/2025 16:49

If she's not housebound absolutely an afternoon tea or lunch out. That age people don't want stuff generally

BadgernTheGarden · 18/12/2025 16:49

Her favourite tipple?

Wheresthebeach · 18/12/2025 16:50

We get 94 yr old MIL books as she's still an avid reader...subscription to pod castes or audio books?

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/12/2025 16:51

Bright red lipstick in a gold case. Our daughter bought one for her 91 year old gran. We were a bit like, what? She bloody loved it!

GoldCrab · 18/12/2025 17:00

we made a photo calendar of her great-grandchildren for my partners 98 year old grandma last year. She loves it and talked about it all year! so much so that we have made her another one with this years photos for this Christmas

Sammmmmy1512 · 18/12/2025 18:11

My nana is 101, I got her one of them window bird feeders you stick on the outside of your window

CluelessAboutBiology · 18/12/2025 18:12

Electric/rechargeable hot water bottle.

PeonyPatch · 18/12/2025 18:37

Cashmere socks, a really posh and plush throw or blanket, macarons, a membership for something like national trust for walking? Bird calendar or diary / notepad, book to do with birds, a nice tea set, her favourite perfume.

Periandtired · 18/12/2025 19:25

We used to get my husband's Nan an Amaryllis every year. It was such a hit, everyone stole our idea and she git several every year. It's a really nice thing to watch grow in January and the blooms are beautiful.

mambojambodothetango · 18/12/2025 19:27

Bird feeder that sticks to the window in the room she sits in most often, so she can see them close up

pilates · 18/12/2025 19:30

Heated blanket. They do nice ones in Lakeland.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 18/12/2025 19:39

My grandmother is the same age, and always says not to get her anything! Consumables tend to get given away, because people give her biscuits and chocolates and things in vast quantities. Flowers end up all over the house, and in pint glasses when she runs out of vases. However, she appreciates good whiskey, Fenjal products, vouchers for meals out/foot spas, and going for a day out somewhere!
