Well op, if nothing else you have given a wonderful Christmas gift to all the posters on here who get annoyed by people putting their tree up early. You can't put a price on the gift of 'I told you so'. I don't think I've ever seen so many 'this is whys' on one thread!

MySilentLions · 18/12/2025 10:56

Nourishinghandcream · 17/12/2025 20:28

And that is why our tree & decorations don't go up until mid-Dec.🎄

All this putting them up straight after Halloween and taking them down Boxing day.🙄

Agree. It’s ridiculous how early it all starts. We do same with decorations etc, so we can actually enjoy them until twelfth night!

Seaitoverthere · 18/12/2025 11:05

Could you make a door wreath? You’ve probably got one but maybe pack it away and make one. Friend and I did yesterday. She doesn’t really like Christmas but got quite into it and we’re doing it with a few more people next year.

Periperi2025 · 18/12/2025 11:09

I strictly followed the organised mum method, 'organised Christmas' a few years ago, and was over Christmas my early December.

I now use her list of jobs to stay on top of things but condense it down to the 6 weeks before Christmas. Much better.

Blimey when we lived in Copenhagen people had lights and trees up till mid Feb in many cases- definitely outside lights

Might be linked to church saying Christmas officially ends in early Feb. I’ve got a nativity out and the 3 wise men only come on 6th Jan 😂

I’m sure I’ve read a hygge type book before that says Scandinavian countries keep lights up over Winter until Spring. I really like that and have kept fairy lights up on the fireplace in Jan/Feb until the lighter and longer days come back.

CharlotteCChapel · 18/12/2025 11:18

I was the opposite this year. I normally get festive early but this year I couldn't summon up the energy. Until yesterday when I felt the need to cook festive stuff. The butter for the stollen is softening as we speak. Take a couple of days off, no Christmas music or Christmas films. In fact I recommend Troll (not to.be confused with theTrolls) if you have Netflix

BeaRightThere · 18/12/2025 11:23

This year Mumsnet seems to be nothing but people moaning about Christmas. I feel like I'm in the minority really enjoying it and looking forward to it. There's so much misery on here about it.

LemaxObsessive · 18/12/2025 11:24

The American family on our street had their Christmas tree & decorations all up the day after Halloween 🤨 🤐 Baffling

Wildegeese · 18/12/2025 11:33

Not to be annoying and virtuous but could you consider donating to a charity like Crisis? They do a lot to help people experiencing homelessness over the festive period .

Or donate to your local foodbank to help families in your area.

Obviously these are just suggestions and only donate if you have the means to do so and aren't struggling yourself.

But these might help you feel more connected to the real spirit of the season. It makes it easier for me to have gratitude and enjoy myself when I feel like I've helped someone else out there. It makes the excess of the whole thing feel more balanced IYSWIM.

Cornishbelle · 18/12/2025 11:46

I think you have time to de-christmas and then get back into it early next week. Watch catch up telly without xmas ads no tree lights on etc and then build up again. Eat plain food etc

Hard agree, our tree has been up a week and I still love looking at it. It'll be up until early Jan. Christmas is special because it's a short season. It's hard explaining this to our kids when all their friends are decorating in November but I think it works out better.

Dolorsy · 18/12/2025 12:22

I put ours up after 9 Lessons or Christmas Eve, whichever, and it goes down on 12th Night. It's so lovely to me to keep this tradition that I had as a child and pass it down myself. I stir up on the last Sunday before Advent. From Dec 1 we have mince pies and an advent calendar, then decorations up Dec 24 - Jan 5, all down by Epiphany, the 6th, except the lights, which we keep up until Candlemas, Feb 2.

We have a feast on 12th Night to eat up all the festive food and swap any unwanted presents and our tall friends are tapped to take down the high things. Then my brother makes short work of the trees with the chopsaw and I stack it for kindling. I like the rhythm of it, the same every year.

Yes it makes it cheery in their gloomier months- they also have the lights festival in early Feb and amazing light art installations all over the city

ArseEndOfChristmas · 18/12/2025 14:28

Ahh, I feel your pain, OP! I work in hospitality and we’ve had Christmas
rammed down our throats as a big selling point since mid September. At first it was all “ooh the lights, ooh the tree” but now it’s hard to not pass the tree without aiming a slap at its scratchy branches and I spend far too long rearranging the lights from where the customers have meddled with them.
It sure as hell takes the shine off Christmas! The music I have to listen to for hours is grating on me, and I too, can’t wait to clear it all away!

henlake7 · 18/12/2025 14:55

Oh no, Im still feeling very much festive!😄
But I know that when I wake up on the 27th I will be fully over it and dismantling the decorations.

TeenToTwenties · 18/12/2025 15:06

DD breaks up from college today.
So tree has gone up and preparation officially begins.

We have had a soft launch with outside lights and Christmas choir performances, but the run in officially starts today.

I was thinking the same.

I put my tree up in November and I am still loving it. I love the twinkly lights and will be sad when it goes down in the New Year. I also still love the songs and the special occasions. I don't think Christmas lasts too long doing it this way. I have great stamina for Christmas and don't go too strong, too early so it's a background thing for quite a few weeks before it properly ramps up. I love it!

😄😄 no, ive had the tree up since mid November and i'm sick of looking at it

I'm thinking about how my flat will look when I put it all away

I've listened to all the christmas songs and no longer feel joy when I hear them. I had to switch over from radio one to Drake on Spotify to keep sane today

I've eaten some Roses and I feel disgusted by all the chocolate already

The only thing I havent done is have a roast dinner atp 😄

I only put my tree up on Monday this week...the first Christmassy thing I have done! Christmas is coming :)

FeetupTvon · 18/12/2025 16:52

Christmas decs all reduced in Sainsburys 😆

I did that once. Was sick of the tree by December. And I d wrapped by November
I am always wanting to clear it all away by 28th because we like to see New Year in all fresh and organised. And gives the dcs space to play properly.
This year I waited till Dec to put tree up. And wrapped in Dec and feels more festive

@Taweofterror i've let the christmas ladies down, I know 🙈😅

Its the most wonderful time of the year. One week to go!

I think i leaned in too hard, so next year will take it slow, and save the christmas music for strictly December!

Going to tone it down a bit until next week!

This is it, I just went too early and too hard

I should've soft launched christmas with slowly introducing lights and decor 😫

Lesson learned for next year.

I'm the same, I like a clean flat fresh for the new year

I put mine up slightly earlier then normal this year (stupid social media) and i feel the same it just seems a bit meh looking at them. I wish I'd waited.
