Book for 8 yo boy

Mine is a teen now so I'm out of touch. What could I get for a neighbour's 8 year old boy? I thought something simple like a book. Wouldn't normally get him a Christmas present but they've just had a baby and I'm taking over a gift so wanted to get the little boy something too.

My 9 year old son likes the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books.

Mine loves Tom Fletcher's the Danger Gang, The Investigators graphic novels and any of the 13 storey treehouse books. He also really enjoys The Famous Five.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dog Man seem to the be the main go-to books for that age.

Thank you all. Gosh, not much has changed since my DS was that age! He's 15 and still won't let me give away his Wimpey Kid books! He also liked 13 Story, dog man, Percy Jackson etc.

The Boy Who Grew Dragons is fabulous. If you wanted something more seasonal, A Boy Called Christmas is lovely.
