"Adults buy themselves what they want throughout the year" does anyone else not!?

I always see this on threads about adult gifts.

Does anyone else actually NOT buy themselves everything they want (not need) during the year? I absolutely wouldn't just buy myself a fancy cosmetic/toiletry/food item during the year and neither would any of my immediate family. All financially stable.

I hate tat, and other people’s ideas of what I want and having to pretend that I love the tat.
I’d rather we didn’t bother and all just bought ourselves what we like.

Mikart · 16/12/2025 21:14

I do. I do not receive gifts though which is my decision. I don't believe that Xmas is the only time to get things

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/12/2025 21:15

I do, but I’m a bit of a shopaholic and I don’t like to wait if I want something - hence the user name (my money, my rules, lol). I still like gifts at Christmas too though!

Randomcrackedegg · 16/12/2025 21:16

I definitely don't. Firstly I can't afford to, secondly there isn't much I want anyway. I'm not at all materialistic. I definitely spend far more on my DC than on myself. I really appreciate any and all presents though.

YouChair · 16/12/2025 21:16

No, I very much would do that if I wanted. But I don't want to that much.

Which is one of the many reasons I'm not much of a present person. I don't actually want more stuff. There is more than enough of it in my house already.

So really I just get cash from DPs to choose something myself when I feel like it, and a proper present from DH, which is often jewellery. I love Christmas and occasions, but we don't do a lot of adult gifts in my family (massive, would be impractical quite apart from anything else)

Gymbunny2025 · 16/12/2025 20:44

I do. That’s why I’m so hard to buy for!

Same.

Newsenmum · 16/12/2025 21:19

I never buy myself anything as nice as Id like to receive as a gift

Clocksabound · 16/12/2025 21:19

I can afford to buy myself what I want, but I tend to be fairly restrained as I'm prioritising saving and investing, so I tend to put spare money into that over luxuries. I tend to buy my own gifts though, so I'll definitely get what I want, and I usually don't like the generic "women's gifts" like candles and perfume.

StarDolphins · 16/12/2025 21:26

I do. But I wouldn’t choose an expensive item of make up. I love perfume lots and so if I want to treat myself to the biggest bottle of what I love, i do. Still with my frugal
thinkjng though, so I might really want a bottle of something very very expensive but I opt for a cheaper one that I love. I don’t go overboard but I get what I want. I do all my clothes shopping on Vinted though! I spend hundreds on my hair products too because it have dry frizzy hair!

TheTowerAtMidnight · 16/12/2025 21:33

I do buy myself whatever I want/need but it's never fancy stuff. I don't buy perfume or cosmetics anyway and I'm fussy about food so I wouldn't want any of those as gifts. I think buying gifts for adults is a waste of time and money tbh.

NowThatsWhatICallRecent · 16/12/2025 21:39

I do (within my budget). I don't buy myself anything special at Christmas, and nor do I receive expensive gifts. I might buy myself something in the sales after Christmas, if the things I have my eye on are reduced.

Same, I love perfume but usually buy myself the smallest size of the more expensive stuff so I’m not spending as much whereas DH would buy me a big bottle for a birthday/ Christmas because it’s more cost effective and that’s how his brain works. Grin

Waitingfordoggo · 16/12/2025 21:45

I don’t. I don’t get any enjoyment out of buying stuff I don’t need, even if I can afford it. I get a much bigger thrill from putting money in my savings account than by spending it.

Christmas is great because my family know that I like notebooks, socks, pyjamas, some leggings, a hoodie or edible treats. All stuff I will get lots of use out of. They are things I would buy for myself because they are ‘need’ rather than ‘want’, but I would buy budget whereas my family will tend to buy good quality because it’s a Christmas gift.

Aaaallthefood · 16/12/2025 21:48

I do to an extent but when I know Christmas is coming, if I run out of/ low on something such as perfume/ skincare then I ask for it for Christmas and wait

tlofmlwcharlie · 16/12/2025 22:04

I do, but I don't want very much so I don't buy much.
I like to buy second hand books and jigsaw puzzles. If I see someone selling jigsaw puzzles for a decent price I'll buy them as and when. I usually buy 2 or 3 new ones I really want in the months running up to Christmas and give them to myself on Christmas Day to do over the Christmas period. Same for the second hand books - I'll buy a few from one of the second hand sites and wrap them up so they are surprise at Christmas.

This year I wanted a special type of ski so I bought them but I can't remember when my last large purchase was before them.

I don't buy decorative items or anything like that.
I don't want people to give me things like that either because I've got nowhere to put them and my cats would wreck them anyway.

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 16/12/2025 22:10

I do, but I only ever want a few bottle of shower gel (MB) and a hair brush or whatever.

Santaareyououtthere · 16/12/2025 22:13

I wish 😞

Before Dd, yes

Notmymarmosets · 16/12/2025 22:20

I buy myself most of what I want, when I want it. There is some stuff I would like, but I can't afford it so I don't have it.
But if I can't afford it, no one else in my life can either, so I definitely won't be getting it for Christmas.

QuietLifeNoDrama · 16/12/2025 22:28

I don’t but only because I can’t afford to. If I had more disposable income I definitely would treat myself regularly. But I’m probably also the odd one out in that I don’t want other people to buy me gifts at Christmas either. I hate surprises and just find myself getting annoyed at the huge amount of money that gets wasted on presents I have no interest in.

Downunderduchess · 16/12/2025 22:29

I buy myself nice things throughout the year, perfume, clothes, bags etc. I just bought myself a new iPad. I know I am fortunate to be in this position. I don’t want or need people buying me anything, In fact I would prefer they don’t, I have specific taste and have lost count of the gifts I have received and donated to charity because I didn’t want them. I would much prefer people keep their money or give $10 to an animal charity on my behalf. That said, I am a generous person and I like giving gifts that are thoughtful and needed.

MCF86 · 16/12/2025 22:45

I do, but none of it is extravagant - or it is something practical that I don't want to wait to have the benefit of.
However I have decided to try and cut back on it next year and build a wishlist instead - then I'll look at it in the summer and again when people start asking about Christmas. I am interested to see if I still think I want it all when I see it as one big purchase, because I bet I don't end up buying most of it then!

soupyspoon · 16/12/2025 22:48

FestiveBauble · 16/12/2025 20:51

I do 😂 I’m a nightmare to buy for, I must buy myself multiple things a week. If I want it, I buy it!

Same here. Was saying to a friend we only really buy token stuff for each other as we have everything we want and need anyway.

I know exactly what you mean. For example, I would never just pop out and buy myself a necklace (not even a cheap one). Earlier today I spotted a really cute Christmas tree shaped plate and suddenly developed a real yen to own it, but I never seriously considered buying it. I don’t just buy myself everything I want - and nobody else ever buys anything for me either!

andanotherproblem · 16/12/2025 23:00

No, by the time I buy for my daughter and bits needed for the house etc there’s not much left for me

GKG1 · 16/12/2025 23:01

I actually said this to a relative recently and knew instantly that I’d made a mistake, that there’s lots of things they want that they can’t afford. But I was thinking it as I shopped for my sister, I know she is like me in buying stuff she wants when she wants it. So it feels like buying extra tat as I know if she wanted notebooks or candles etcc she’d buy them.

Like others have said, I also don’t have loads of things I want for myself. I really struggle to give people ideas of what to buy me. DH and I don’t really exchange gifts at Xmas, we both have what we need. Sometimes get ourselves a spa day or trip away but we do that anyway from time to time, so just attach it to Xmas for the sake of having something to give at Xmas.
