Vegetarian Christmas dinner?

HereWeGoAgainNow · 16/12/2025 14:54

I'd be really grateful if the vegetarians here could tell me what they're cooking and eating on Christmas day or Boxing Day please, with links to recipes if at all possible.

We're normally a meat-eating family but my son has become vegetarian at university and I'd like to do meat-free meals while he's home, especially on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Thanks for your help. 🙂

I'm making my pescatarian husband a pecan and chestnut loaf from Good Food magazine. He doesn't want the harissa sauce.

Vegetarian Christmas dinner?

I'm not a good cook but we are a vegetarian household. For Christmas lunch we have the usual roast potatoes, veg, stuffing and (vegetarian) gravy. The main event is the M&S butternut, almond and pecan nutroast, which is gorgeous. I order it through Ocado. www.marksandspencer.com/food/plant-kitchen-butternut-almond-and-pecan-nut-roast/p/fdp60290093

My dp has made this twice at Christmas and it’s pretty spectacular. Tbh it’s quite time consuming though. www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/jewelled-squash-chestnut-mushroom-wreath

I used to make mushroom wellington - look at BBC Good Food. Now I buy individual veggie wellingtons from Lidl or Aldi

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 16/12/2025 15:03

That’s so lovely of you and whomever else is eating with you.
I’m having a nut roast with a mushroom and crème fraiche sauce, roast potatoes etc on Christmas Day.
Boxing Day we’re having an Asian slaw with vegetable gyozas, sticky sesame coated Szechuan tofu strips and tempeh lettuce cups.

Lots of recipes online, the gyozas are frozen.
Merry Christmas!

For convenience, the vegetarians in our house have the same Christmas dinner as the meat eaters, apart from the Turkey and the pigs in blankets.

We don’t cook potatoes with fat, sprouts with bacon etc, and then the veggies have a Sainsburys veggie Turkey crown. And veggie pigs in blankets.

We used to do a beetroot Wellington, but it’s so much easier to do fake Turkey. We now do the Wellington on New Years Eve, when the meat eaters have beef wellington, and we all have the same accompaniments

ChubbyPuffling · 16/12/2025 15:08

My DD is veggie and always wants "just xmas dinner please"...

so I make meat - turkey/ stuffing/pigs in blankets/gravy
And non meat - this is not chicken/paxo/quorn cocktail sausages wrapped in whatever "not bacon" we have/gravy.
The veg and roasties and yorks pud (yes i know, but non-negotiable) are veggie ones anyhow. It's not hard, mostly prep the differences before, and everyone gets what they want.

TennesseeDreams · 16/12/2025 15:10

I'm getting this from M&S for DH and I. It's my first year being veg at Christmas, DH's 8-9th. He sometimes makes a nut roast but tbh he thinks the M&S and Waitrose versions are alot better and easier.

For christmas eve we will do a fruit and cheese platter with nice hams for the DCs. Boxing day I do gammon with cauliflower cheese and peas and we will just have that without the gammon. I like doing honey and sesame seed carrots and minted peas as well. I LOVE cranberry sauce with cauliflower cheese.

I’m having a lentil loaf with all the usual trimmings this year. Sounds boring but it’s totally delicious, easy to make and great in sandwiches the next day.

gogomomo2 · 16/12/2025 15:11

I made a butternut squash, roasted red pepper and goats cheese wellington for my DD’s last time they were with me at Christmas, basically roast butternut squash with red peppers and onions, roll out a roll of puff pastry cut off 40% and put onto a lined baking sheet, put the roast veg on leaving a gap around the outside, add fresh herbs of choice (I like sage) season with salt and pepper push goats cheese into gaps (blue cheese also works but I made it vegan for my brother) and a handful of fresh or frozen whole cranberries. Use beaten egg or milk around the pastry edge, put remaining pastry on top trimming off excess and use to decorate. Wash with the egg or milk (or vegan alternative)

brieandcrackers · 16/12/2025 15:13

Really recommend the Quorn roast! I’ll be having that with all the usual veg and meat-free pigs in blankets. Haven’t decided yet whether to roast my sprouts with chestnuts or fake bacon (or both!).

I’m the only non-meat-eater in the household so will have plenty of the Quorn roast left for slicing up as part of my Boxing Day buffet.

vegetarian haggis with yorkshires, roast parsnips and potatoes, gravy etc.

housethatbuiltme · 16/12/2025 15:39

We have a cheese pasta with broccoli and peas.

We also have loads of roasted parsnips, yorkies, cauliflower, carrots and mash with it.

I'm not a fan of any of the 'fake meat' options.

Asda use to do a fantastic chestnut wreath but I haven't seen it this year. We never had it on Xmas day but did use to get it for other days, I imagine it would be nice on xmas day too.

Inthedeep · 16/12/2025 15:50

I made this last year, it was very popular and can be pre-made and frozen in advance if needed www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk/recipes/ottolenghis-butternut-crunch-pie/

Where do you get that from? I haven’t had veggie haggis for decades.

Ive never found anything that was particularly nice with Xmas dinner, and I usually just have all the veg and roasties with bisto gravy (which is vegan). Last night my family had a. Gammon roast and I had baked pear halves with Brie, cranberry sauce and pecans, which was delicious and went well with the rest of the meal.

Are these available now? I went especially to Aldi to get one for my DS but there was nothing they advertised in there. No wellingtons, no veggie pigs in blankets. I'm going to Lidl on Friday to get all the stuff, If they haven't got any, Ill be making a nut loaf. The one above posted by @CaptainMyCaptain looks lovely!

Notsureibelonghere · 16/12/2025 16:05

I'll be having quorn roast. I'm looking forward to it.

This is the one I’ll be making but do a google because there’s tons of different versions depending on what flavours you enjoy.

I can't seem to make my phone copy the link, but Rachel Roddy's red cabbage, apple and chestnut pie in ricotta pastry.

I buy the Macsweens one in Waitrose. I’m in Gloucestershire and they always have it so assume it’s standard .

Macsween veggie haggis is delicious & you can get in in Tesco not sure about anywhere else as I usually only do online shop, but it is really lovely.

Vegetarians are no problem. Be grateful you have no vegans.

Yes, they do usually have them in Waitrose. I got one a couple of years ago when they hadn't got any regular haggi (the butcher said they had all escaped).😂
