My DS has just turned 5 and got lots of birthday gifts related to his interests - Lego, magnetic tiles, books, etc. He’s a quiet boy and loves that type of thing. He’s interested in trains, Ancient Rome and the Great Fire of London, he’s that type of boy and friends and family have leant towards those interests
when choosing a gift. He also got a remote control car which is extremely loud with flashing lights and he absolutely loved it was doing genuine belly laughs. I would love to get him a Christmas present that elicits that type of response. Something genuinely fun for kids. Bold and brash and loud. Or silly. Any suggestions?

My ds really enjoys some of the more outrageous Hot Wheels tracks, like the City Ultimate Garage set.

Does he already have wooden railway? One of the few gifts that grows with the child once you get points and more and more complicated layouts.

It can often be bought second hand.

Trackmaster is good too but you need lots of batteries! They did a glow in the dark set at one point.

In terms of loud, mine has a robot that repeats back whatever you say. That was fun

Look on Wicked Uncle
Just one silly, loud example

We have bought 5 year old the super Mario drone. It’s like remote car equivalent and for little kids. It’s wasnt too expensive and should be a laugh

Yourinmyspot · 15/12/2025 13:35

I got DD a remote control poo at that age she found it hilarious.

Ooh some great ideas here, thank you

Depending what he’s like with numbers/colours/pairing, UNO Extreme elicits this response in my 5/6 year old, she loves it, combination of suspense and schadenfreude I think. Has longevity too, whole family including older child love it. He might need a bit of help at first…

It’s only a little something but ds loved getting a whoppie cushion in his stocking from Father Christmas at that age!
mainly because he knew mummy would never buy him something so rude/silly…

HewasH2O · 15/12/2025 13:39

I was about to say a whoopee cushion too

Cornishmumofone · 15/12/2025 13:39

I’d recommend a tub of fake indoor snowballs. They’re very soft and can be played with indoors as long as you don’t have lots of delicate ornaments around. DD9 loves ours and begs to have a snowball fight (and so do my colleagues in my office!)

A Speed track will elicit the excited response - it certainly does here and has versatility as you design the track differently over new obstacles new locations etc but it doesn’t have any of the flashing lights - perhaps you could find some novelty cars for that aspect though. I bought that for my son aged five and he’s now seven and still gets really excited when it’s brought out to play.

Pineapplewaves · 15/12/2025 13:48

Does he have any silly board games that everyone could play together - Twister, The Floor is Lava, Marshmallow Madness………

My DS has power saber light sabers and they are so fun. The light up tube appears when you press the button and they make whooshy noises when you swing them. I've never even seen Star wars but I love a light saber battle now! We got them as a 2 pack on Amazon.

This was my go to with this age group:

Some kids found it a bit scary at first. For those they’d watch first while the adults and older kids gave it a go. Usually lots of laughs when grandad/auntie/cousin got caught and eventually they’d always end up wanting to give it a go themselves.

We’ve bought DS6 a London Underground train set! Different to all the Thomas ones.

Mine enjoyed a remote control lizard that walked on the walls. Not much longevity, but lots of excitement on the day

WiltedLettuce · 15/12/2025 21:20

Inflatable swords and shields. My two love bashing the hell out of each other and usually end in a giggly pile on the ground.

KimuraTan · 16/12/2025 00:02

My kids love these - apologies if posted before:
