How come The Grinch is everywhere?!

If you walk into Tesco, Asda, home bargains etc everywhere you look, is The Grinch.

The animated film came out a few yrs ago and it is great. I really enjoy watching it and much prefer it to the one Jim Carrey was in...but! I don't get why everything is all about the Grinch these past few yrs. McDonald's stuff is covered in the Grinch too - why?!

I know
Bloody annoying

GhislaineDeFeligondeRose · 15/12/2025 00:23

I noticed two companies have it in their Christmas ad. McDonalds and Asda. I quite like the expression "spenny gifts"

elliejjtiny · 15/12/2025 00:53

McDonald's grinch frozen lemonade is amazing though.

So my understanding is this. Dr Seuss’s widow was fully in charge of any licensing/merchandise etc after he died and was incredibly strict about it so there was relatively little stuff out there to get, especially outside the US. I know this because my son was a big fan of Dr Seuss and it was nigh on impossible to get anything other than the books.

this got worse after the disastrous Mike Myers film adaptation of The Cat In The Hat and for a long time she wouldn’t entertain any adaptations or anything like that until she finally allowed the animated Grinch film that Benedict Cumberbatch was in and was released around the time she died.

since she died and other people took over it’s been a massive drive to get as much merchandise etc out there as possible to make up for the time when there was very little opportunity to capitalise on the brand because she was so protective of it

The Grinch has a big marketing team!

KarriTreeSullivan · 16/12/2025 12:51

I was asking this very same question at the weekend! Such a horrible Christmas character in such an unpleasant shade of green! The rhymes are annoying, no-one in my family has ever been in to Dr Seuss, the Jim Carey film is nightmarish! The animated one though is rather sweet.

It's just odd an unnecessary!

FionnulaTheCooler · 16/12/2025 13:01

Funnily enough I received a Christmas card through the post this morning with the bloody Grinch on it. I was tempted just to bin it as I can't stand any of that Dr Seuss stuff, it's unbelievablely irritating or maybe it's just that I can't stand Jim Carrey or Mike Myers.

NotQuiteUsual · 16/12/2025 13:05

The Grinch is Christmas Stitch

henlake7 · 16/12/2025 19:14

Its definitely not my thing.....I'm a Nightmare Before Christmas girl!😁
Today I was wearing a Nightmare Before Christmas sweatshirt and beanie and currently in the pjs!

Tinytotdriver · 17/12/2025 06:33

It’s everywhere! As PP said, two adverts have him in and so many shops sell the merchandise.

I was thinking the same about how many shops have Wicked stuff in. It seems like everywhere has been allowed to make Wicked merchandise.

Thank you for sharing - very interesting!

It’s probably the same reason why William Morris patterns are now everywhere from charity cards to lamps… the copyright or patent has run out/become more available.

OldPosterNewName2025 · 17/12/2025 09:06

Videos keep coming up on my timelines with him turning up at houses and terrifying little kids whilst the adults think it’s hilarious 🤷‍♀️.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 17/12/2025 19:37

So me and DH looked up the biggest selling Christmas film ever and it is indeed, The Grinch...who knew?!

But yeh...kinda sick if it and I do really like the latest animated film.

I couldn't agree more.

Make it stop.

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 18/12/2025 06:43

I agree. I feel even more about. 'Elf' being pushed everywhere every year. I thought it was boring 😶‍🌫️

Home Bargains do a delicious packet of sour apple GrinchJellies though.

Bought them for the Xmas stockings from late November onwards and keep eating them myself.

On my 4th restock now 🤭

Blarn · 18/12/2025 06:53

I can't stand the Asda and McDonalds adverts on the radio with the grinch. Sometimes they play them back to back and so I have to listen to two different terrible impressions of people trying to sound like Jim Carey being the Grinch! Although I've never actually seen the film, perhaps it's actual clips from it? I will never watch it now though thanks to the annoying adverts.
