Christmas Day wine recommendations?

I’m starting to think about wine for Christmas dinner - a red and a white - what are you having? We’re having a traditional turkey and all the trimmings, and looking for recommendations, particularly for the white!

My favourite white wine is Vermentino, also like picpoul de pinet but a decent Sav Blanc or Viognier would work.

A Sancerre works well Christmas dinner!

(preceded by a chilled bottle of Cremante for some bubbles!)

I love a Gavi

SleepingisanArt · 14/12/2025 16:48

Sancerre for the white - it's 'special' and delicious. Barolo for the red - not too heavy to go with turkey and is another 'special' wine (don't buy really cheap though!) Or a nice Pinot Noir as it won't overpower the turkey.

Which Vermentino do you buy? I’ve only ever had it in Italy, would love to buy one here.

I would say an unoaked Chardonnay would be good, such as a Chablis, and a decent Pinot Noir. You don’t want anything too punchy as it would overpower the turkey.

How have you managed to miss all the innumerable articles on best Christmas wines in every quality newspaper, @WhatWouldTheDoctorDo?

M&S sometimes do it, Aldi didn’t this year - I get mine via Naked Wines - I think Majestic sells it - it’s delicious isn’t it?

We tend just to drink Chrem with dinner as well - lovely stuff

We have got a Savennieres this year for our white - a special type of Chenin blanc from the Loire. For red, I’ve bought a bottle of Nebbiolo. Normally we have a Brunello di Montelcino but changed it up slightly. I’ve also got a box of Louis Latour Macon Lugny for general drinking which is a bit of a classic (unoaked Chardonnay)

GingerbreadGirls · 14/12/2025 18:02

For red we have Chateau du pape, and for white Sancerre. Crement for those that like bubbles. This year we have also added in British Wine, from Camel Valley, having been for a tasting. Looking forward to white Bacchus and Rose Sparkling.

Hadalifeonce · 14/12/2025 18:04

Sancerre and Crozes Hermitage.

I haven’t missed them, I was just interested in other opinions and suggestions…

Thank you to all for sharing your suggestions. For all you you suggesting Sancerre, any particular recommendations? We normally stick with Pinot Noir for red @SleepingisanArt , I shall check out your alternative suggestion (although I’ m the white wine drinker at Christmas in our house).
