I feel like both his birthday and Christmas presents this year are a bit - shit, to be totally honest.

For some reason, he really wanted a spinosaurus toy. I don’t know why, he’s not massively into dinosaurs; more of a trucks and tractor kid, but I got it for him. Now I sort of regret it.

I’ve got him https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9375262 this too. And some colouring books and bits and pieces but I feel we’re kind of missing a showstopper gift that he’s going to be thrilled with. So just wondering if anyone has any ideas? Feel like his birthday will be a letdown Sad

Getting so over this nonsense. Buy him a superyacht and have done with it. Otherwise realise a warm, safe roof over his head, parents who love him and feed him and care for him plus something nice to play with on his special day is ALL a five year old could possibly want.

Rain? Meet, Parade. 🙄

Why even comment on the Christmas threads if you don't want to be helpful?

For many Christmas & Birthday is not just the Wow factor on the day its what the child will use and benefit from through the next year and beyond.

People love to boast on MN their kids get nothing outside of Birthday and Christmas so its doubly important to get it right when they are next to each other.

Competitive underconsumption. Mumsnet is full of parents who don’t heat their homes, buy their children nothing, and live off one chicken for a fortnight. Only the middle classes would play this ridiculous game.

I didn’t even mention overconsumption, but WTF with the ‘showstopper’ presents. OP has been reassured that she’s bought him some lovely presents, but Jeez, unless he’s just hysterical with joyful disbelief on unwrapping them, it’s all a non event. Handwringing “Is it enough?” “He must have more!” Besides, it’s the Christmas thread, not the Birthday thread.

Don't over think it @tiredanddrained i have a 5yo DS who is tractor and monster truck mad. His birthday was November. I dont think kids at this age have the concept of "showstopper" presents - they also don't care. I've asked him repeatedly what he wants for Christmas from us/father Christmas and all he wants is more monster trucks.
We don't have a show stopper present this year because I don't want to buy things for the sake of it.

Things that he's loved in the past that your little boy might like- remote control Monster jam truck (the big ones) - the grave digger one is brilliant - can use on snow. And the megladon is also really good.

@BeepBoopBop i just don’t want his birthday to get eclipsed by Christmas, that’s all. He got a Tonie box the year he turned three and then last year he got a bike so while I think the globe is great I just stress he might find it a bit boring.

Thanks for the reassurance.

So you thought you'd dump on this thread because it's the Christmas thread?
Interesting. Perhaps you should speak to someone about that? 🧐

A bungee hopper from Wicked Uncle?

Serendipawtous · 13/12/2025 22:23

I'm a Christmas baby myself and to be honest, I don't remember getting excited about show stopping gifts - I was just excited to open cards and presents and then do it all again five days later, it was an incredible feeling 🙃

Blessedbethefruitz · 13/12/2025 22:38

@tiredanddrained Nothing wrong with your gifts at all, but given his interests, you could get a reasonably affordable rc monster truck (the little monster jam ones are often 2 for £20 and last years) that would give a lot of very exciting play :)

My DS adored that globe at 5/6. Agree with others saying that you shouldn't worry at all and it's really the "birthday experience" that makes it special (a birthday badge is a great idea!) but if you're looking for another "big present" and he got a bike last year then does he already have a scooter? Could be time for an upgrade to a two wheeled one?

Girasoli · 14/12/2025 08:48

Is it a biggish Spinosaurus that roars? If so DS2 (nearly 6) got that from Santa last year and still plays with it nearly every day. He's asked Santa for a new dinosaur to fight the Spinosauruas this year.

user1471538283 · 14/12/2025 09:50

My DS's birthday is 2 weeks before Christmas and whilst he cannot remember many if any of the gifts what he always remembers each year is how I always kept the two things very separate. Everything was geared towards his birthday, a party, a cake. Even now the tree doesn't go up until after his birthday.

So it will be as special for your little one!
