Was watching “best Christmas tv ever” on channel 5 the other day and it just highlighted how elite Christmas tv used to be. I always find it kind of bland nowadays an and end up watching the classics.
a few of my faves
royale family
goodness gracious me Christmas special
the Christmas generation game.
Noel’s Christmas presents
the two ronnies
Morecambe and wise
always watched the Christmas only fools and horses.
the vicar of dibley.
whats some of your faves?

Just watch the Absolutely Fabulous Christmas special… it was fabulous!

I second the Royle Family & Vicar of Dibley. Also the Father Ted Christmas special.

I’m also a huge Mrs Brown’s boy’s fan and love the Christmas specials.

My favourites were The Box of Delights and The Children of Green Knowe - I was just the right age and we had an open fire so it was magical.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 08/12/2025 23:19

The box of delights was my childhood favourite

mondaytosunday · 08/12/2025 23:29

I love the old stop motion shows from the 1960s that were broadcast every year like Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer, plus of course the Charlie Brown Christmas Special. I also miss the old variety shows like Andy Williams - needless to say I grew up in America.
We always watch Love Actually and Elf and other favourites. Occasionally there's a decent new offering but still watch all the old ones.

Stompythedinosaur · 08/12/2025 23:47

I have a soft spot for The Good Life Christmas Special.

evilharpy · 09/12/2025 08:48

Knowing Me Knowing Yule with Alan Partridge
Father Ted Christmas special

Anything else is a bonus but these are the two mandatory ones that must be watched when we finish work for Christmas and not before.

I have a soft spot for The Good Life Christmas Special.

This is my favourite too.

Oneearringlost · 09/12/2025 09:13

I know is this not nostalgic TV, but I'm looking forward to the Christmas "Here We Go".
Agree with The Royle Family and Vicar of Dibley and The Good Life.

Coffeeishot · 09/12/2025 09:16

I love Vicar of Dibley, the Royale Family and Gavin and Stacey Christmas specials,

Rockfordpeach · 09/12/2025 09:28

I love The Flint Street Nativity. It was a Christmas tv special in the 90s, popular actors of the time as children in the nativity. I need to see if i can find it anywhere

SparkleSpriteDust · 10/12/2025 14:29

Blackadder's Christmas Carol.

Yay, so nice to find a fellow Mrs Brown's Boys fan. I know it gets slated on here but a few years ago, watching the Mrs BB's Christmmas shows helped get me through a rather stressful time. They were light relief so I have a soft spot in my heart for them. 💕
I know it's not that old but I've watched the first Motherland Christmmas special more times than I can remember. Still love it.

I was going to suggest this! We have it on DVD and it comes out every year.

Men Behaving Badly Christmas is a must see every year. Forgetting to turn on the oven, getting drunk at the pub, cursing Deliah Smith and deep frying Opal fruits from the petrol station for dinner after midnight 😂

Mr Bean special where he gets his head stuck in a turkey and has the world’s most boring New Year’s Eve party.

If your tastes run to dark comedy, Always Sunny in Philadelphia has a Christmas episode where the gang come to some realisations about their childhood Christmas experiences.

JenniferBooth · 10/12/2025 16:18

The Home To Roost Christmas special from nineteen eighty seven. Absolutely hilarious yet it never features in any of these nostalgia programmes. The episode is called Family Ties.

Oh, Motherland Christmas special (First one) Absolutely! Genius.

Oh I am loud and proud about my love for MBB. She/he reminds me of my dear old nan who is no longer with us. The show brings me comfort. It also got me through the nightfeeds with my last baby! (She’s a December baby. Well, almost pre schooler now!)

It is! The second Christmas special was too sad for me.

rhubarbhandsoap · 10/12/2025 20:45

Oh I love this thread! So many classics on here, I would add The Office.

Fanny Craddock for me. It's so nostalgic and safe.

RunSlowTalkFast · 10/12/2025 20:59

Father Ted with the lingerie department 😄

I have to agree with you on that one too! I remember I was so looking forward to the 2nd Motherland Christmas special as the first was so good. Watching it really put a dampner on my mood! Nothing like the first.
