What can DD (11) get DH?

DD (11) and DH are going on the Church Christmas Shopping coach on Sat and I've asked our vicar if she or another nice church lady can separate DD off from the crowd to buy DH something for Christmas. I'll give her money - I was thinking £20 but I can give her a bit more if necessary.
They are going to a large regional city and we have been there twice before for Christmas shopping but it's been me and the DCs, we went to John Lewis and the DCs bought DH a belt and a handkerchief set and he has used neither of them.
I'm getting DH some posh marmalade, a pair of not-too-novelty socks (black with a fun logo but you won't see it when he's wearing them), a lovely Community Clothing navy lambswool jumper (his main present - his current navy lambswool jumper has holes in it), and I found a Noddy egg cup a while ago (vintage - from his era).

DH also likes football but a) has nothing from his team and b) they are shopping in a city where his team's rivals are top dog!
Ideas please - he's very hard to buy for - he sometimes asks for a specific football book but other books go unread.

Can't you just buy him something he wants and say it's off her?

Whichone2024 · 04/12/2025 19:23

Maybe a nice mug to go with his marmalade and egg cup?

She's 11, not 2. She's excited to go Christmas shopping and choose something but I need to give her ideas.

@Whichone2024 we have so many mugs we've had to set up a third mug storage area to fit the overflow from the first and the second.

Food he likes ? Gloves ,hat, scarf ...playkng cards? Somethjg photo bases personalized ..

MrsMattSantos · 04/12/2025 22:31

have you got a nice pic of the two of them she could get printed and put in a frame?

drspouse · 04/12/2025 22:32

He's just said "I have everything I need... Gloves, hat, scarves". He's so annoying!
I think I'll suggest some food actually - at least if he doesn't want it I can eat it! The lovely vicar will help choose.

honestly I'd give her the money and tell her to get something she'll think he likes. surely he'll love it because his daughter picked it for him? if he had specific wants it would be different but I'd just let her choose. otherwise you might as well go shopping for her!

What sort of job does he do - if he wfh or at a desk job a nice pen

Do they play Uno - there is new fiendish version although they sell it in Waterstones it is cheaper on Amazon

5foot5 · 04/12/2025 23:56

A book? Does he have any favourite authors with a new book out?

Would a jigsaw be something he would enjoy?

BeaLola · 04/12/2025 23:57

Latest Bob Mortimer book

drspouse · 05/12/2025 08:15

He doesn't read (see OP) and is retired (annoying since commuter gifts were a staple for ages!) but I didn't know about the M&S chocolate bar - I'll pass that on!
Very fussy about pyjamas. I love the man but he's so annoying to buy for!

I reckon a card or board game she would like them (and others) to play

Blueuggboots · 05/12/2025 10:01

A nice pen?

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 05/12/2025 10:29

So first of all, it’s very bad form of your DH to not be seen wearing the belt his DD got him previously. A talk is needed about the importance of your dc seeing their gift is appreciated- even if it’s not. Kindness etc. I worked my way through several crap books that DCs have bought me over the years purely so they could see me reading their gifts.

He might need to accept an upgrade for hat, gloves, scarf etc and then use the ones dd has chosen over the ones he’s chosen himself.

Other idea, are there any tv shows what watch together or films they’ve been to see together ? If so, is there a board game or book associated. (Thinking something like the 1% club board game or the taskmaster one etc)

food items - chocolates, snacks, nuts etc. she could get a few things plus a nice gift box and make him a “dads snacks” hamper.

drspouse · 05/12/2025 10:48

Thanks all for the ideas, DH does take books that are gifts on holiday and is seen reading them but it will be the same book for years running!
I'm going to suggest food and a game (advanced Uno sounds a good call).

I think it bizarre that they would go on a shopping trip together to be separated off to buy gifts for each other.

it think it’s lovely they would go shopping together. Tell him to pick something, say oh wow I’d really love that for Xmas and they she can buy it him.

it doesn’t matter what it is

iPreferBooks · 05/12/2025 16:38

My Dad is also very hard to buy for. Each year he get's two big Toblerone's and either a walnut whip / tunnock's teacakes! Bit boring but at least he enjoys them and they get eaten, any books / DVD's etc will probably go unused.
