So confused by supermarket turkeys!

I usually just pick one up on 23 or 24 December, but having had a mild panic last year when there were none left in Sainsbury’s (got one in Asda) I thought I’d be organised and book a collection or delivery. However I can’t seem to reserve a whole turkey to collect or deliver on either 23rd or 24th, either from Sainsbury’s or Asda? They’re just saying not available or not in stock. Am I too early? Or too late?! Am I doomed to trailing round supermarkets on Christmas Eve again?

I would say too late.

Can you pick one up now and freeze it?

Lennonjingles · 02/12/2025 13:50

You are too late to add to a delivery. I either get mine from M&S or Tesco around the 21 Dec, they all are dated 26 Dec and I’ve never had a problem getting one.

But Sainsbury’s says order Christmas food by 15 December?!

Waitrose always seem to have them available on Xmas eve!

I pretended I wanted to
order this and collect. on 22nd from Sainsburys
you need to scroll down a lot on their website past the Turkey crowns

Ive just looked on Morrison groceries and the turkeys say they are available from 20th December

I think the best thing for you to do instead of just walking around the shops and looking, is to talk to someone in the meat department or an assistant manager or something like that, find out what the deal is.
Is it too late to order a fresh turkey for the 23rd / 24th?
And if it is not too late, get on the waiting list.
And if it is too late, go to a few other stores or small butcher shops or other places you can think of.
And if it's too late for that, then consider getting frozen, and if that's not an option, consider something other than turkey this year.

I think it means they have run out of allocated Turkeys for orders, just buy 1 and freeze it or buy a frozen.
