What are your 4-5 year old boys loving?

I need to buy for a couple of family members in this age range (both boys). My children are teens now so I’m a bit out the loop with what would go down well with this age group.

I’m perhaps looking more for games, books and things that are a bit different as I know they’ll probably already have a lot of toys linked to their favourite characters etc.

DS age 4.5 loves Marble Rush sets, the simpler Lego sets and is especially taken with the Hot Wheels playsets that have things like giant sharks, loop the loops, dinosaurs crashing through a car park etc. He is the youngest of 3 boys so we had a million Hot Wheels/Matchbox type cars knocking around but somehow never had any of the tracks for them until I got him one on a whim one Christmas and he is now obsessed. They link up together and we got a hand me down bag from another family which just compounded this joy.

Dobble and Uno are also very big hits here and crucially playable for the older members of the family (whereas I groan every time the Very Hungry Caterpillar board game is brought out for the 1000th time).

The personalised Wonderbly books with the hidden characters are also great - the ones like Where's Wally but they find themselves. I found the others a bit naff but the search and find ones are brilliant. These are a bit expensive but there are usually codes knocking around to take the price down a bit.

Lego, Hot Wheels, puzzles, all sorts of construction toys, books and creative stuff.

I'm introducing Playmobil this Christmas as he's really into role play too.

This is one of my sons gifts that I think looks quite cool link

He is also getting one of those remote control geckos that climb walls, a Minecraft themed magnetic building block set, a golf put set thing.

I also got him this and this which may look a little young for a 5 year old, but my son absolutely loves anything he can unlock, screw and drill.

This looks amazing! I’m definitely getting this. My kids will love it and what a good way to make use of all the delivery boxes we have after Christmas!

Gagamama2 · 02/12/2025 22:41

We love these so much. Both my kids will spend hours together joining boxes together.

Hot wheels, lego, magnetic tiles, playmobil. DS loves snakes & ladders.

Monster jam remote control monster trucks (the big ones) - recommend Megladon and Grave digger which you can use on snow, sand, water etc - has the wow factor.

Magna tiles
Funny bunny game
Sink n sand game
Gooey Louie game

Books - Bum or Face, Nibbles the book monster, Emily Brown, Sir Scallywag books - all get lots of laughs in our house
National Geographic kids do beautiful books and activity sets

AnneButNotHathaway · 09/12/2025 12:03

Hoodies or t-shirts
Funny socks
Kinetic sand
Magnetic Minecraft blocks or Lego
Printed and framed pictures of them in their favorite game or cartoon scene (basically you make a photo montage of them as their favorite characters, here is a guide for it)
Puzzles
UV-pens
Science kits
Lava lamps or LED lights
Hot wheels
A big pack of fruit snacks

FunnyOrca · 09/12/2025 16:42

Marble run, sweeping brush, “Halloween cats” (basically anything about black cats!)
