Gift wrapped presents with the brand on display - yay or nay?

I have bought my nieces a Dior lipstick each - feels very decadent as I have the style of a binbag and the lipsticks cost more than most individual items in my wardrobe, but I'm sure that they will love them.

Dior offered complimentary gift wrapping, so I thought "why not?"

They have arrived now, and while the gift wrapping is lovely, it has Christian Dior prominently displayed on the box/bag (for some reason one came in a bag, the other in a box🤔). I have also ordered Charlotte Tilbury make up, and paid for the gift wrapping, so I assume that it will be the same.

The question is - do I give the presents as is, where the recipient will know that they have been given make up for the Charlotte Tilbury, although obviously won't know what exactly they have been given until they open it at Xmas? It sort of feels like giving the game away early.

As I am not into designer labels, nor am I a young woman in the 18-22 age bracket, I'm not sure whether I should pop the branded boxes into a standard gift bag with some tissue paper to conceal the surprise, or if I should give them as is.

I haven't given gifts of this type before, the gifts I have given up until now are trainers/money type things, so some guidance would be appreciated.

Also, are they going to be disappointed when they open packaging that's about 15cmx 10cm to find a single lipstick and a metric ton of shredded paper?😂

Can’t help you with your gift wrapping dilemma unfortunately, but I’m wondering how I can get myself onto your gift giving list? You sound like a great present giver!

JG24 · 30/11/2025 19:31

I would put in another box so they get a nice surprise om Xmas day but maybe try and find one a similar size?

JG24 · 30/11/2025 19:32

And it's a lovely gift!

I think the branded wrap is part of the luxury! Not great for surprises though.

RessicaJabbit · 30/11/2025 19:33

Put it in a box/bag.

HoppityBun · 30/11/2025 19:34

When that’s happened to me, I’ve always, always put another layer of wrapping paper over so that they do get a surprise on unwrapping.

Cherryrainbow · 30/11/2025 19:35

Personally I'd go berserk with joy because I'd keep the gift boxes and stuff as it would be a rare/special treat. I think they'd be fine like that x

MILLYmo0se · 30/11/2025 19:43

Leave them in their branded wrapping/box/bag (that's a huge part of the appeal), but put them inside a gift bag (I'd go for the tackiest cheapest looking gift bag I could find so the surprise inside is even better)

catontheironingboard · 30/11/2025 19:56

I’d pop them into another little gift bag or box just to conceal the surprise!

Ooh, I like this idea!

I had a Chanel lipstick as a Christmas gift and a few days later the box arrived - it was a Chanel cardboard box that I had to put together. My friend had ordered the two together, thinking the lipstick would be in a gift box.

This.....my daughter stores her "designer" gift bags on her shelves.

There's a market for selling some branded packaging for display purposes too

Shed rather admire them at the moment 🤣 but will tell her x

The Dior Christmas gift wrapping is stunning, with the little gold metal star decoration tied to the handles - is that the one you’ve got? Definitely leave them in the wrapping.

MulberryPeony · 01/12/2025 06:33

Oooh I’d leave as is. I’m sure they’re going to love it.

Linenpickle · 01/12/2025 06:45

I’ve bought something posh which has been gift wrapped and I’m wrapping the actual paper shopping bag it came in - with store gift wrapped inside - so they get the whole lot.

lxn889121 · 01/12/2025 06:59

Personally, I would wrap it, either in the bag, or without the bag - so that it is a surprise.

If I did it without the bag, I would keep the bag, and stash it somewhere, so after they have opened it I can say "oh, it came with this bag, but it was a bit big to wrap.." etc.

TheChosenTwo · 01/12/2025 07:04

I just give them in their fancy bags - part of the price of the packaging means I don’t also then have to pay to wrap it! Plus they tend to just look really pretty under a tree. The size of the bag leads the receiver to expect a present of that size, for a small bag they’re not going to be expecting 7 items in there!

This

The Dior packing etc will be fabulous but they will still get that wow moment if you pop it into a standard gift bag first - especially if you have to give the gift pre Christmas so they will have no idea .

I bought DS girlfriend a Chanel compact mirror for her. Birthday - came in a beautiful purse/pouch thing with a couple of free samples - she practically self combusted in opening
