Is there anything that replicates the taste and mouth feel of old Dairy Milk?

As in how dairy milk used to feel and taste, not dairy milk that is old
DH regularly laments old Dairy Milk, it really is his happy food! And he doesn’t have many vices, I would love to get him some for Christmas.
Thanks

Would this not just apply to filled chocolates, rather than bars? Can't see anything about it on website.

(Actually, even the filled chocolates say 6-8 weeks.)

Edited

Possibly? I'll report back. Order coming next week. They're very busy.

i still love wispa bars but not sure if that’s because the recipe is the original or if the bubbles and aeration make it taste better

I'm sure I read somewhere that they can't get them to work using the new downgraded ingredients, so they (no doubt regretfully) had little choice but to use the old recipe. Maybe the figures still add up for them as, when you account for all the air bubbles, they're using far less chocolate per bar anyway?!

Even so, nice as Wispas are, they still can't provide the same deeply-satisfying taste that you used to get biting into a solid, chunky bar of original Cadbury's.

Hmm I agree. The original poster should get a sackful of freddos, buttons, wispas and twirls and melt them all down slowly in a Bain Marie. Pour into a massive chunky choc bar mould as close to the original DM shape as possible. Wrap in purple foil. Get some vintage DM wrappers printed to print stick over the top. That would be an AMAZING Christmas present and just the type of thing I would love to spend Dec hyper focusing on perfecting 😂😂

omg I might do it. Off to research choc bar moulds…

We have seen some of the rebranded British national rail trains with the union flag on them, I think there is an argument for them doing a national chocolate bar with the same kind of design!
Terry's Neopolitans is another gem gone to the great confectionary shop in the sky, I would now pay £25 for these - though admittedly they were always a Xmas treat, to be enjoyed while watching The Snow Queen on 1970s telly, and not a weekly consumer choice, so a bit niche.

DH has just done a blind test of Whittakers and said "that tastes like Dairy Milk used to". So maybe it is the best substitute (I still find it too sweet, though).

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 12/12/2025 20:36

Whittakers melts nicely in the mouth and is a nice size chunk but I’m not that keen on the initial sweet strange taste, but it does disappear as you keep eating.
We all did a taste test with the Harris and James bar tonight. It’s ok but the flavour could be a lot stronger for me, it’s quite delicate. Not sure I would order either again. Still have 3 bars of each to eat though.
I’m still looking for the Cadbury replacement bar

do they sell Ritters Sport in the UK? it is a german brand we have in Canada. They do nice chocolate and palm oil is not used in the choc (but is used in some of the fillings). I like the Alpine Milk but they do loads of different flavours, also fond of the cornflake chocolate one.

Yes they do, just bought a selection box of small bars in waitrose. They also sell the standard size.

My Kennedys order arrived!
I bought a few things plus a couple of bars of the milk chocolate. P&p was £6 so I had to make it worth while 😉

I've just tried the milk chocolate and it's delicious. Very smooth and no bitter after taste.

Oh and I watched a youtube video the other day that said the snowmen chocolates etc in Aldi don't have palm oil in. So I'll be testing them soon.

But is it Dairy Milk-esque, or just nice milk chocolate … ?

It is from what I remember, not identical? Delicious either way.

I'll check out the snowmen from Aldi but I looked at their ingredients and doesn't look as good as this chocolate.

Has anyone mentioned Divine? No palm oil and fairtrade.

DefiniteMeteor · 16/12/2025 23:09

My Harris and James order arrived but it was the wrong one…. She did say they’d been swamped (Mumsnet effect?) and sent me the right one the next day. So five bars of the price of two!
Interested to hear feedback on Divine too

I'm overjoyed to realise that Freddos are much more like proper old Cadbury's. I hadn't had one for ages, but have now become a convert!

How ironic that they keep the recipe for a line that is primarily aimed at children, who of course will never remember how it used to be decades ago to be able to compare.

Divine is nice, but one of the nicest I've had recently is Seed and Bean. It's incredibly smooth, no palm oil and no lecithins either. They do a "rich milk chocolate" and various flavoured ones. It's not the same shape as the old Dairy Milk chunks though. I can buy it from various small local shops, everywhere from farm shops to health food shops and slightly fancier newsagents. I'm surprised by all the love for Cadbury's buttons. I found them incredibly dusty -tasting. I now like Montezuma's giant buttons, many times the price but worth it.

Bayroot1 · 19/12/2025 20:40

Just thought I'd show you the chocolates I accidentally bought when I got the choc bars (plus others for gifts). I was thinking I'd gift these but couldn't think who to give them to? lie

There's one I don't think I have the heart to eat? Can you guess which one? 😉 I didn't choose the chocolates it's random choice. You can choose your own but there's about 120 different ones to choose from.

I'll get some divine next time I'm in Tesco as apparently they have it?
