Is there anything that replicates the taste and mouth feel of old Dairy Milk?

As in how dairy milk used to feel and taste, not dairy milk that is old
DH regularly laments old Dairy Milk, it really is his happy food! And he doesn’t have many vices, I would love to get him some for Christmas.
Thanks

Right everyone, I bought some of the Dark Milk chocolate from M&S and I feel it doesn't taste antthjng like Dairy Milk, just tasted like dark chocolate 😔

CinnamonJellyBeans · 05/12/2025 22:17

I've got 25 quid of whittakers on the way, so hopefully this will be a mumsnet recommendation that works (for once)

LighthouseLED · 05/12/2025 22:24

I must be the only person who wasn’t that impressed by Whittakers.

The closest I’ve found is the Tesco biscuit and raisin bar, but that’s no good if you just want chocolate without the bits in.

I want to recommend Harry spectors chocks they were suggested elsewhere on here ,special award winning palm oil free. However when I ordered some it came with a leaflet stating that every 69p from a pound goes to autistic people and they employ and train autistic people as well.

Win win for Christmas

I’m going to buy these now on the back of your post. Thank you x

tangobravo · 06/12/2025 07:53

I actually think Freddos do this!

CinnamonJellyBeans · 06/12/2025 09:35

Harry Specter get their chocolate from Callebaut, who have been associated with child labour. They source their chocolate from areas where there is a lot of child labour and child slavery (Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire).

Child slavery is rife in the chocolate industry, which keeps the costs down for you and me, when we purchase and eat it.

Surely that's bollox? It tastes so lovely! I deserve a treat!

FestiveYoni · 06/12/2025 09:44

@CinnamonJellyBeans no !! Really ??

Thats extraordinary ? Their chocolate isn't cheap either ?

I'm going to explore their faq

Edited to add : they do use callevobort but they state the support farmers and the industry ? Maybe they have changed ? A few years ago everywhere was using child labour ,wittingly or unwittingly

PeopleTheyAintNoGood · 06/12/2025 10:04

I don't much eat Cadbury any more due to the change in taste.
On the back of this thread, you'd think they'd be getting the message and changing it back, but I've just Grok'd it :

Impact on UK SalesDespite vocal consumer discontent—evident in Reddit threads, Quora discussions, and articles from 2015–2025—quantitative data shows no negative impact from any purported recipe change. Instead, Cadbury Dairy Milk has sustained or grown its market dominance in the UK chocolate sector (valued at ~£1.6 billion in 2025).
The longer answer says the creme egg change cost them 6million ten years ago.

Anyway, Tony's Chocoloney is lovely.

"support" equals kind thoughts and maybe prayers? Or quotes from a regulatory body policy document about the required standards. Doesn't mean they're following the standards.

CatsMagic · 06/12/2025 10:09

Sainsbury’s own brand chocolate- it’s real ingredients, and no palm oil, it’s lovely

Another vote for M&S

This one particularly

How on earth does dark chocolate give the same taste as the old dairy milk?!

YourWinter · 06/12/2025 10:14

Tony’s is too chunky for my teeth to cope with!

Tesco Dark Milk is my favourite lately, but it’s hardly a Christmas luxury.

Same! I was so disappointed. Not worth the money if you’re looking for an alternative to Dairy Milk imo

Have you had Tony’s recently…? They've changed the recipe and it’s not the same as it was. (My sister contacted them and they confirmed they had changed the recipe although I can’t remember the details of what has changed.) it’s so disappointing that companies do this, often when they get taken over… the quality of Hotel Chocolat has really gone down too and that is not cheap!
On the upside, I’m eating a lot less chocolate than I used to…

FestiveYoni · 06/12/2025 10:15

@CinnamonJellyBeans

Forever chocolate campaign to eradicate child labour by 2025.

FestiveYoni · 06/12/2025 10:16

@Pineapplesunshine unfortunately margins are very thin and business is under immense pressure to keep afloat

Oh noooo, when? . Don't say that. I had a huge bar of the milk one last week and it was lovely.
Mind , it was from our local shop so could've been in there for years 😂

☺️I do understand why a lot of businesses do it, but as others have said, I’d rather pay more for a better product.

Given it often happens when a smaller brand is taken over by a larger company or when investors up their share (Hotel Choc, Tony’s), it can feel a bit like profiteering, although I appreciate it isnt always. Either way, as a customer it’s disappointing😢

FestiveYoni · 06/12/2025 10:39

@Pineapplesunshine agree but didn't realise they have been taken over !!

FestiveYoni · 06/12/2025 10:39

I think with Tony’s it’s investors upping shares rather than a takeover as such, but Hotel Choc was taken over by Mars. (You might be able to tell I really like chocolate from my extensive research on this😆)

ps @PeopleTheyAintNoGood you might want to buy up your local shop’s stock of old chocolate!

Weirdly the very basic Cadbury buttons easter eggs, for about £1, taste like dairy milk used to taste.

I think you're right , it's really sad that one of the most simple satisfying things in life has been ruined and despite an outcry Cadburys don't seem to give a shit.
Even though there are some nice brands out there nothing compares to original Dairy milk ,same with original Galaxy.

My husband just looked and me and pointed out it says dark chocolate so of course that's what it tastes like. But I was like "but people on Mumsnet said" 😂

elephantsinhats · 07/12/2025 11:10

Some m and s milk chocolate is the closest I’ve found - I just ate some of the ‘chocolate vegetables’ and they were lovely (sorry DC!). But you have to read whether the product contains palm oil or not (the chocolate coins did last year, so they were gross but other chocolate products don’t)d
